RE: tobacco

I'd like Mark to expand beyond a single word on how the tobacco industry is so corrupt.

I find the "truth" ads to be far more corrupt and full of misinformation than RJ Reynolds & Phillip Morris.

RE: tobacco

I don't see how you could blame tobacco companies for being corrupt. If you ever took the time to look at all the deaths attributed to cigarettes you will find that the death certificates name numerous diseases, i.e. cancer, emphysema, heart disease for the cause of death. Nowhere does it say 'cigarettes'. People that have never smoked a cigarette in their lives get cancer. Kids, like Dragonmaster for instance, get cancer. In your example of the mensa man and his smoking habits, you don't mention any of these diseases. There are so many things that people have attributed to cancer (cell phones, microwaves, red M&M's, Nutrasweet) that i wouldn't be surprised to hear that anything gives you cancer anymore. I would be willing to bet that if you subsisted soley on a diet of bread and water you would eventually get cancer. The tobacco companies have come under fire only because they make millions by catering to an exclusive segment of the population. There has been no scientific evidence that conclusively links tobacco to any disease. Bad breath? yeah. Yellow teeth? yes. Death? no. Eating the line of bull$hit that the man keeps feeding you will probably cause cancer as well.

RE: tobacco

Nik Ashmost and Harry Dillsucker must be smokers; living in the smokers’ world of denial. You can’t face up to the fact that the “truth” ads are true! You must be kidding yourself Harry Dillsucker; you think that more non-smokers die from lung cancer and emphysema than smokers? Face it, there is an extremely huge correlation between smokers and death. You are right however, one cigarette does not cause death it's the compounding of pack after pack that eventually leads to death. DuMb AsK! You guys are too freakin funny.

RE: tobacco

Yes I'm a smoker. And yes I'm aware that smoking isn't healthy.

This doesn't mean the "truth" ads are true at all. Check your facts instead of instantly believing their assumptions please. According to truth, ANYONE who dies of cancer, died from cigarettes. I'm sorry, that's just a bogus, blatant lie.

If you believe the "truth" ads you must also believe that anyone who smokes pot is instantly going to wind up getting killed or pregnant from one night of partying because mommy didn't talk to them about weed.

"truth" should start targeting something other than tobacco companies. They should go after Nabisco & McDonald's & the likes. Obesity kills more people a year than smoking ever will.

P.S.

I'm still waiting/hoping for Mark to explain how the tobacco industry is corrupt. Smoking may not be healthy(same way Big Mac's aren't). But how does something being unhealthy make it corrupt?

RE: tobacco

I rase my glass to nick. Tobacco companys are not currupt at all. The truth.com has no ****ing evidance to there accusitions whatsoever. its ****ing bull**** that people think they are so ****ing honorable and righous because they are exposing the truth about tobacco. They are just getting people to buy there ****ing T-shirts. Tobacco companys dont fraud anything. they ****ing tell you right on the pack that it probabally will kill you. they dont ****in lie. They are just conducting a profitable buisness.
The truth makes there ****in loot by "backing up" class action lawsuits against people who died from "tobacco related illnesses". RJ just kicks em 5 mill to shut the **** up for a week then they go and print more ****in T-shirts.

RE: tobacco

I think that you could argue that back in the day of early tv ads the tobacco industry was corrupt. Creating ads that had dr's saying "smoke Paul Mall's and relax." Oh, and in the early 80s when all the old-timers were getting cancer and didn't know why--then the companies were like, "oh, we're not responsible." Yeah, there's some questionable ethics, but isn't that just big business in any form?

Anyone who started smoking during the past 20 or so years (and I believe that'd cover most of the people on this board) did so with the knowledge that it's bad for you. These companies are up front about the diseases you get. They don't, however, stress that cigarettes are so addictive. That's the real problem. If you could get away with smoking 1 cigarette once in a while to kick back with a beer it would be one thing--but that's something I could never do.

For the record--I'm a former smoker who misses it every day. I'm still horribly addicted even though I've been clean for almost a year.

Also, I have never seen an add that states, “ANYONE who dies of cancer, died from cigarettes”. Get real.

RE: tobacco

You get the whole "Catch-22" thing going on here. Basically, everyone knows that tobacco is bad for you, including the people that grow it, sell it, and the people that make the actual cigarettes. The bummer is the addiction thing. Most people that I know that smoke, wish that they could quit, but it just doesn't seem to work out. I can sympathize because when I try to lose weight, it sure would be nice if all of a sudden they could quit making Mountain Dew and Doritos, (and all the other bad stuff) because that is my weakness!

Which is worse? Them chosing to make money producing tobacco products, or consumers chosing daily to put smoke in their lungs everyday even though they know it is bad for them. Supply plus demand times addiction= Mon-ay Machine.

What about Girl Scouts? They got us all buying 50 boxes of cookies at $3.00 a box!

RE: tobacco

Absolutely...the Girl Scouts are the most corrupt. Getting us all hooked on Thin Mints and Tag-a-Longs and then jacking up the prices every year. I've tried to quit, but my cookie dealer comes to my house and bangs on the door and my will power just gives way. How can I say no to all that minty goodness? How can I say no to the Girl Scouts? I can't. I guess I just have to pay whatever they ask. Damn them. Damn them and their cute little green uniforms. Damn their evil merit badges...

RE: tobacco

It would be one thing if the tocacco industry made pure cigarettes, free of the extra chemicals and additives that make them even more addictive. That's my beef with the industry. Perhaps so many of the people who are addicted to cigarettes today wouldn't be if the Marlboro man wasn't adding 600+ additional chemicals to those things.

RE: tobacco

give me a break! They don't put those chemicals into the tobacco! Who the hell would do that? That whole list of chemicals that are "in" cigarettes are simply the ingredients of the glue that holds the cigarette together. Do you think that some cigarette executive was sitting around one day smoking a butt and thought to himself, "Yeah, this cigarette is good, but what if I put 400 chemicals into it....."
