| Posted By: Shae' Posted On: Dec 19, 2016 Views: 346 | Scoliosis survivor I am happy to say that my surgery done in 1984 by Doctor Clyde Nash at Cleveland, Ohio St. Luke's Hospital was a great success and a life saver. I am now 46 years old with 3 adult children 1 c section, and 2 natural births. The rod that was used was a Harrington rod. My scar from my surgery is not at all noticeable and the one on my hip is very well blended with my body. I must say I am blessed not to have the complications that others have experienced, but I must say thank you to my Doctor Clyde Nash, Maryanne and the team of Doctor Nash for a job well done. Doctor Nash if you read this I wonder if you remember you did my surgery one day then Michelle the next day and our families requested us to share a room together and we grew as bonded sister's. Again thank you. |

| Posted By: Deanna Posted On: Apr 11, 2007 Views: 3302 | Some other info Sorry, I'd like to mention I had my operation when I was 13 going on 14 and now I'm 34 years old. I had one child by C-section and probably won't be able to have any more due to extra bone growth from my body making fusions to balance my hips out. I have numbness in my left toe which I've had ever since the operation and chronic pain 24/7. I try to act normal, but it's tiring. I fell very ugly due to the surgery scar, curvature, and twisting of my spine. Again, I've been told I'm very beautiful, but I don't feel it! If you would like to visit my blog, it's www.musicolia.blogspot.com I am going to post some of the CT scan pics there. |
| Posted By: Deanna Posted On: Apr 11, 2007 Views: 2860 | Back Pain Trust me, I really understand the back pain. I have a harrington rod that is broken, and I'm finally seeing a specialist in May - only took 16 months - the max on the waiting list! I had CT scans re-done today, and boy oh boy my back is a mess. I think I have some separated ribs too. Sheesh. I wish I had a brace when I was younger. I know what you mean about the pain and street drugs. I have used many street drugs to relieve the pain. It's ridiculous how doctors don't and won't listen. Find a new doctor that will get you some help. You may have disc bulges like I do, arthritis, and narrowing nerve openings. Yes, the pain is severe and can be helped with medications. Even antidepressants help to an extent. I even find being slightly dehydrated helps. Funny, but true. Unlike what some of you commented, my pain is mostly on the non-hump side. Again, this is due to my ribs being separated from the spine. If any of you would like to converse, I'm on MSN - frottola at g mail dot com. Convert to a regular email address. You can also email me at that address as well. :) Deanna |
| Posted By: Lea Posted On: Mar 19, 2007 Views: 2869 | Summer's Comment Summer, don't feel alone. I had the Harrington rod and fusion. The same happened to me. Numbness on one side - protrusion on the other. I had 4 children with no problems. The emotional scars will never heal and how people can be cruel. I've always been told I'm pretty, but with the back issue, it's been rough - pretty much impossible. I gave up on relationships due to this as well. Good luck! |
| Posted By: Stephanie Posted On: Nov 15, 2006 Views: 2892 | scoliosis I had surgery when I was 9yrs. old, I am now 31. That was 22yrs ago! I had the stainless or a titanium one put in my upper to middle of spine. My incision is from my lower neck to my tailbone. It's hard to remember exactly everything as a child; only remembering never could do everything others my age did, and discomfort alot! I have had 3 kids, wich went well, and worked as a CNA for many years. My back now is awful! Pain is unimaginable at times and it is so hard to make Dr.s understand. I also see pain management. On pain killers and muscle relaxers, and antideppresents! The pain does not go away. I also have numbness on basically my "hump"! Shooting pains down back, and constant pain down entire spine. But, why do DR.s make me feel like I make the pain up sometimes? Or others? I would like to find a specialist who understands the pain, can relate! If anyone feels they found their perfect DR. please tell me about! Need to find answers to this pain I will feel for the rest of my life, and probally get worse with time! |
| Posted By: Kathleen Posted On: Oct 20, 2006 Views: 2885 | My Surgery Experience Well i had the surgery when i was 17. The was 10 years this Aug2006. Worst thing i've ever had to deal with. The first 5 years were the most painful, along with Migraines ect. Now i have recently i guess been choosen to be in the 5 percent of people who have the surgery and have my stainless steels rods being rejected by my body after 10 years. It stated like a zit on my scar and has since grown to the size of a dime. It's my own personnal drainage whole. I was put on anibiotics and the infection never went away now i have to so now my surgeon says i have to get the rods taken out and new titanium one put in. There suppose to have a better chance of your body not being affected by them. So after 10 years and thinking i'll never have to go through that pain again.....here we go again. It will be less pain as it's not going to be the spine manipulated. But i'm definetly going to ask if he can flatten my hump!!! Anyone out there had that done and has it stayed down! My first surgery he did that but after a year it came back!!! |
| Posted By: Kate Posted On: Jun 13, 2006 Views: 2988 | Surgery I had surgery on my spine but only for the top part so they did the incision around the side of my body under my breast. I have now returned for a 6 month check up after my operation and have been told i still have a curve at the bottom so they are going to bring me back in another 6 months to see if it progresses or anything. This has me really worried because i dont think i could go through that operation again! Has anyone had to have more surgery after part of the spine has been operated on already?? |
| Posted By: Summer Posted On: Jan 18, 2006 Views: 3175 | ~My Hump...My Hump...My Hump~ Ive had 2 back surgeries...I found out that I had progressive scoliosis in the 6th grade(the screening:()My curve @ its worst was 75 deg. just up @ the top...after that I began seeing an Ortho. which he then recomended a brace...a very uncomfortable brace I had to wear 23hrs a day, even during the summer. I eventually got so sick of the brace that I opted to have my 1st surgery in the 8th grade~my surgery was performed by Dr. Clyde Nash @ Cleveland Metro Health..They put 2 steel rods in my upper back thinking that the bottom would follow...they were wrong~well I had a lot of numbness & pain around my shoulder blade that the rods were surrounding so my Jr yr I had the rods removed...did I mention I hadnt stopped growing when they removed the rods? & where the bones had fused my rib caged grew out to accomodate the progressing curving of my back. So now I not only still have the numbness I also have a a chronic pain around my shoulder blade that is on the same side that my lovely "hump" is on. I thought about having another surgery to drastically flatten out my back for the 1st time in a long time...it wont be perfect but it wont be as noticable. Im doubting now that it will even take place, its ridiculious that insurance companies call this type of surgery "cosmetic" in other words they feel its not needed.. & why do we pay out soooo much $$$$$ every year for the sh*t? |
| Posted By: Traci Posted On: Jan 4, 2006 Views: 3177 | scoliosis after the surgery I was 6 years old when my parents found out i had scoliosis. I wore the back brace for another 6 years. i had my surgery when i was 12 years old and curently at the age of 39 i have been having some much chronic pain. Over the last seven to eight the pain has gotten worst. I have been of on every kind of pain medication from anti depression because some doctors don't seem to understand this pain. My curve was severe to need the surgery 27 years ago. the fusion was done mainly in neck and it seem like my neck get's tighter and tighter and currently i seeking treatment at a pain clinic. i was just really curious is there anyone who suffers with chronic pain from scoliosis. |
| Posted By: Niyea Posted On: Nov 29, 2005 Views: 3105 | I had Spinal Fusion My spine was a S shape. The top curve was about 48 degrees and the bottom curve was about 56 degrees. I had my surgery about 4 years ago. Since the surgery my curves are down to 11 and 13. I never had back pain before the surgery but now i do only when the weather changes though. |
