I would say so, 5 stars.

Also to say that such a creature would only briefly grace our history and not have a catastrophic impact is rather out in left field as well. I remember DM saying something about good dragons and bad dragons a while ago, I mean seriously, what are you smoking?

RE: Great dessert chef, here we go..........

I don't doubt the possibility thaty dragons exsisted. I won't argue about it because it's pointless to try and change people's minds about certain things. But here's my personal theory about Fire breathing. Maybe they didn't really breathe fire, maybe it was some form of chemical reaction, but back then they didn't know about chemicals and such. Maybe some how it got on human and all they knew was it burned, and so maybe the only other thing they knew that burned was fire, and so they compared it to fire in stories and such. Over time perhaps the stories got distorted as all stories do, to Dragon's breathing actual fire. That's just one of my theory's. Also my personal opinion is that all legends have some sort of basis at some point in time, so even if the story is distorted, it had to have some basis even if it was wrong. Perhaps Dragon's as we think of them weren't what really exsisted but are the best image we can combine from stories that have been filtered over time. So to say that a Dragon couldn't have ever existed is as unreasonable as thinking that other prehistoric animals didn't ever exsist. I have theory's on the fossilization thing, but I have said my peace for today.

Or possibly the fire breathing wasn't as much as we would assume. Like maybe a big plume of flame and smoke and thats it. Its possible that like the komodo dragon the decaying remains of animals in thier mouth created toxic chemicals and gasses, and their teeth might have sparked when struck together, and they just learned to breathe out when the spark light some of those chemicals on fire. Thus some flaming goo shoots out (like a molitov cocktail, not like a napalm bomb) and thats why they claim it breathed fire. Would be a pretty effective tool to get enemies to run away. ANd if any flames resided in the mouth just close mouth and hold breath until the flames were suffocated. Like one of those candle smotherers. takes like 3 seconds usually. Like i said, the flight im not too sure of. As far as the biblical reference goes it says it was land based and could swim in water although its body was so hot as to create a cloud of white (bubbles from boiling water) Thats nothing new. A number of reptiles can swim well.

hmmm....so for it to boil sea water that engulfed its body that quickly, it's skin temp would have to be, what, 500 degrees or more? yeah, that makes sense.

Nah, not 500 by a long shot. Waters boiling point is like 210, but boiling is just the molecules speeding up to the point where they push each other away until it turns into a gas. Combining a body temp of around 150 with the thrashing of the body would cause the water to churn with about the same force as a rolling boil.

RE: Great dessert chef, here we go..........

uh...that's sketchy science. first off, water boils at 212, but to heat it rapidly enough to boil on cantact, the surface of the other object would have to be well over 212 to transfer the energy to the water fast enough to "boil" it. also, the churning/thrashing of the water would never produce enough friction to compensate for the extra 50 degrees. Let me ask you this? Does a running boat propeller produce enough friction to heat the water surrounding it by 50 degrees? That certainly produces enough "trashing". No way! Not even by .00001 degree probably.

But those props do churn that water to cause the bubbles...It could have been a combination of water heating up and being thrased causing it to foam up and bubble. It doesn't exactly say its boiling, just that when it swims it leaves a shining wake and as if the deep had white hair. Yeah, it would require a very high temperature to flash boil the water, and furthermore to sustain the boil as the surrounding water absorbed body temperature.
