Speaking of Useless Characters

How the hell did Edge get any votes? I mean, has someone found a way to keep him _alive_? Not only is he drastically underlevel by the time you get him, but his crappy defense is second only to his crappy magic defense! I mean, Gilbert is pretty crappy, but at least he admits it. Edge pretends to be cool guy ninja, but sucks.

Bards arent as weak as they seem

Try casting a status effect on that spoony bard. 'nuff said

That spoony bard...

Why is he even on here? I mean, when your character's special ability is to run away from battle and hide, you know you got problems... ^_^

Rydia and Rosa

Rydia's the best because of nuke, meteo and odin. Level her up to like 80 and she's pretty useful. Same story with Rosa, her white spell is really useful as well, especially against undead creatures.

response to CecilBlade

cecilblade made a good point about tellah, but think about it.... if tellah gained MP then he could cast meteo BEFORE he fights golbez. sure thatd be helpful but it would defeat the whole purpose of watching the tellah VS golbez fight wouldnt it? i voted for everybody, by the way.

Almost all

I have to agree with DaggerDias here: most, if not all, of the characters of FFIV were perfect for their point in time. However, I didn't like Tellah because of his low MP (MP growth is permanently halted at 90 points!) and his low HP, making him near-useless without an MP regenerator (such as a White Chocobo or save point) nearby. FuSoYa was also kind of weak physically, and he gained levels so slowly it was sad. However, even these minor flaws in the characters didn't stop me from enjoying the different skills of every one (I liked using a lot of different characters with different skills rather than sticking to a powerful few), which is why even the likes of Gilbert/Edward, the "spoony bard," had a place in my lineup. Good job, SquareSoft.

Rydia

Rydia was my favorite FF4 character to play because of the way she changes thru the game: she goes from a kid with Summoner and White Mage abilities to a Babe with Summoner and Black Mage abilities!!

BTW, I STILL think her correct name should be "Lydia". Sounds more european.

Top 4

My top 4 are:
Cain - He was incredibly useful. Despite all the treachery, he was a powerful fighter, his jump kept him dealing damage and kept him alive.

Cid - That magnet cave would've been impossible without Cid. He was dealing the most damage here with a big wooden hammer. Plus, his airship was invaluable.

Tella + FuSoYa - Well you could end a fight with a single spell with these two. Meteo was kinda pointless, since high level elemental spells could kill in a single hit anyway.

Da throwing guy

I thought Edge was pretty cool once you started duplicating high lvl weapons to throw. Hitting 9999 damage per throw near the end of the game is very sweet, and doesn't cost a thing. Haven't played the PS2 version, so not sure if thats been fixed. Kain is semi-useful, but he can disappear for most of the battle with huge duration jumps. FuSoYa just because he's got Meteo.

everybody

i voted for everybody. (this poll was my suggestion, by the way.) i said everyone cuz you always have the perfect party for every event. dark knight cecil and kain are unbeatable in the beginning, kain leaves and you get rydia and tellah who have weak magic but you dont need to overkill anything yet. when tellah gets replaced by edward it was probably to make the next cave tougher and it did. rosa shows up next just when you start to need a healer, and so does yang to add attack power for the next two bosses. everyone but cecil is replaced by tellah and the twins. cecils dark knight attack is getting less useful but the twins and tellah have their magic. then when things are starting to get tougher you get paladin cecil and yang! the twins are then replaced by cid and tellahs aresenal of better spells which makes you ready for the tower of zot difficult place where tellah leaves, rosa and kain come back to make your party twice as good when you fight a hard boss. cid then leaves but thats ok cuz rydia comes back! now you have one of the best groups in the game, and it doesnt get any better until EDGE takes yangs place. this my friends is the ultimate party. fusoya and golbez show up for a little bit but they arent as useful as kain who comes back making the final party. Paladin Cecil and Edge take care of fighting, kain is in the back row doing jumps as rosa heals and rydia nukes. see? the perfect party, during every event. the guys who made this game were geniuses. (sorry if this was kind of long.)

The Final Five

If they aren't in your final party, they're not that useful. Palom and Porom are the chibi-Rosa and Rydia (They even get Holy and Meteo). Tellah doesn't have enough MP, FuSoYa is slow and doesn't have enough MP, Yang doesn't gain HP later on, Edward's equipment selection sucks, and Cid just isn't in the level of the three main fighters.

The Engineer

Cid of course. He's the only character to naturally get 9999 Hp, and he hits stuff with a huge hammer. Plus he builds airships, and he even blows himself up and just walks it off. I mean, you can't go wrong with all that.

My Man FuSoYa

FuSoYa rocks because he uses tons of magic from the instant that you get him including the upper levels of ice, fire and lightning spells and meteo

Most useful character

Palom gets my vote. For a few reasons:

1) Twin. Really good ability.
2) Learns good spells quicker than Rydia. (ie: I got him to learn Bio, Quake, Fire3, Ice3, Bolt3, & Flare!)
3) Has decent HP for his level.
4) Gains MP fast.
5) Can get in a few good attacks with the holy arrows equipped.
