If it were about occupation, then this conflict could have been over almost two years ago. In July 2000, then Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Barak, went to Camp David II with a plan that was so far-reaching that it was a shock even to the widow of former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, architect of the Oslo Peace Plan. Barak "cut to the chase" and offered Arafat 96% of the West Bank and Gaza, while giving him 4% of Israel adjacent to Gaza to comprise a 100% transfer of land. He offered the PA three-fourths of the Old City of Jerusalem, sovereignty over the Temple Mount, five neighborhoods of eastern Jerusalem, the right of return for 50,000 Palestinians living outside the territory, and a PA parliament building within eyesight of the Old City of Jerusalem. Arafat rejected this offer and walked away without a counter offer.

This is a religous battle. It's been going on for a long time. Both sides want controle over their religious landmarks. It's not about one guy. Ironicly this battle is destroying what they are fighting for.
