I think the Telekinesis Poll is telling 'Porkies'

66% of people who have voted on this poll 'Does Telekinesis exist' say Yes.

I think someone has to much time and is sitting there voting more than once (a lot more) or there doesn't seem to be enough people voting who thinks TK doesn't exist. I personally think the first point i made is most likely the reason.

Either way the 'Poll' doesn't seem right.

I'm one of the 66%, and I agree - it does seem pretty unlikely/unusual
You could be right - it's probably been rigged

RE: I think the Telekinesis Poll is telling 'Porki

I have to disagree with you guys, I don't think the poll is rigged.
You can only vote once from your computer, if you were sad enough to want to vote twice you would need to go to another computer and how many people would do that?
The real reason is because the poll is self selective. Those people that do a Google on telekinesis do so because they obviously have an interest in it and are therefore more likely to believe in it.
If you were to stand in the street and ask passers by at random the result would be a lot lower, just as it would be for the poll on the moon landings. That poll shows that 39% believe it was a hoax. Genuine polls put the figure at between 1% and 6%, depending on how the question was worded.

RE: I think the Telekinesis Poll is telling 'Porkies'

I didn't look at it from that angle but would agree with you. I assumed that because the option was always there to vote that you could vote more than once. Suppose majority of people visiting this page are supporters of TK as they probably have a lot more interest in the subject.

Keith you said "You can only vote once from your computer, if you were sad enough to want to vote twice you would need to go to another computer and how many people would do that?" LOL don't be fooled, such people (Peter Flack) do exist! :)

RE: I think the Telekinesis Poll is telling 'Porkies'

Actually guys, it is very very easy to vote more than once from a single computer. I wont get into how to do it here because I would not want to tell those who do not know how to do it, to go and do it. This may slant the poll further. But believe me it is really easy to do and I would say that many of those visiting this site already know how it is done!

Sorry bubbap, but I find that hard to believe.
You would have to explain how it was done before I even began to believe it, never mind how it may affect the poll!

RE: I think the Telekinesis Poll is telling 'Porkies'

No problem Keith, you asked! It is easy. If you are using Windows, and running Internet Explorer, go to Control Panel, open "Internet Options" Click on Delete cookies, delete files and clear history. Click "yes" when prompted to "delete offline files". This is not data destructive. The way your counter knows I have already voted is by putting a small piece of code on my computer called a "cookie". Simply deleting this cookie solves the problem.

Now, if by some chance the applet that counts the results in your poll registers IP addresses from a requester in its ARP table, just release and renew your IP address (using ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew at a DOS prompt) to get a new IP address and BANG, you can vote again. It takes less than 30 seconds to do this.

Furthermore, should your counter register computer names, by simply renaming your workstation in the System applet in Control Panel, you can revote again.

One more. Should, by some miracle your applet that counts your poll should actually read a requesters MAC address from the requesting NIC card, you can simply spoof this MAC address to fool your counter to think it is a different workstation accessing your web page.

Sorry, I know this is long winded, but each of these tasks are simple and can be done in seconds by someone with reasonable computer knowledge. This is not hacking a site or compromising anyones security or data, just a way to vote multiple times if one wishes to do so.

Anyhow, I think it is best you know that this can be done easily. Online polls are very easy to manipulate. I assure you also my friend that I have not personally done this to your site nor will I. I enjoy your site very much as it is.

If you know someone with strong computer knowledge, or if there is someone out there reading this, I am sure what I have written can be confirmed.

RE: I think the Telekinesis Poll is telling 'Porkies'

Hey Keith, I just confirmed that your web poll tracker coded by Sparklit, uses a computers IP address to determine if a computer has been used to vote. I just changed my IP address and was able to vote a second time. I voted 2 times "No" to the question, so you may need to take this into account if you are tallying your poll. Not that it is a big deal though!!!

RE: I think the Telekinesis Poll is telling 'Porki

Hi bubbap,
Thanks for the info.
Although I have a Mac and can't check what you say about Windows, it makes sense, and yes, Sparklit do use IP addresses to check voter's ID.
I didn't know it was that easy to cheat.
However, the poll is of no interest to me for the reasons I have already stated, it will always give a false total.
I only use the poll as a means of getting a message board, so if anyone is cheating, it makes no difference at all.
I could of course delete your instructions on how it's done, but why should I bother? If it makes the sad little sods happy, then they can cheat away as much as they want.
Thanks again.
Keith

The IP and cookie method sounds about right, I'm not sure about the rest.
And I haven't done any of this either - I really don't see the point.

RE: I think the Telekinesis Poll is telling 'Porkies'

I was about to vote YES myself, but realized I wasn't sure.
This site proves the teeny bopper "proof" is horse****, but you gotta remember that at some point people thought the world was flat.

Just cuz nobody has actually proven it yet doesn't mean its not gonna happen some day.

But you have to ask yourself WHY nobody has proven it yet.
