the radiometer

Look at that picture.

I have a feeling that this is somehow related to why a psi-wheel works.

For a radiometer, photons bounce of the white side of the radiometer, thus spinning it. I have one next to me and it's very fun to watch.

RE: the radiometer

The psi wheel is not composed of seperate vanes, it is not coloured white on one side and black on the other, and it is made of paper.
How do you manage to see a connection, other than they both spin round?

RE: the radiometer

You can make a psi wheel out of any material you want. Also, you can decorate it in any way you fancy. These two issues are beside the point.

RE: the radiometer

The decoration makes a huge difference to what it does.
Eg. white reflects light, black doesn't. Angle of reflection means separate vanes would be more likely to work, or possibly be more efficient. And so on, so forth.

I'm guessing this is what Keith hinted at.

RE: the radiometer

You are correct Placebo.
The fact that it has seperate vanes that are coloured white on one side and black on the other is the reason why it works.
That is why it cannot be compared to a paper psi wheel.
