Reiki

Hi Mr. Mayes,
I would appreciate it if you could share your thoughts on reiki.
I have read most of your topics and message boards and we really think alike, thanks for the hours of fun!
I practice reiki (level 3) and I believe in it because I have felt it. The initiation is done sitting down, eyes closed,in silence(except for the ringing of one small bell). During each of the "attunements" (1 for each level) I have felt something I can only describe as waves of energy, tingling, and various visual impressions. For example, during the 3rd level initiation I felt warmth and saw light coming in the outer corners of my eyes, as if there were candles close to my face(there weren't), circles changing colors from purple to white, followed by an endless green space.
So, I wonder, do you think it's only autosuggestion, because I didn't believe in it before I felt any of this and the reiki energy itself (during a treatment) and I only tried it out of curiosity because my brother is a reiki master and it was easily available to me, or maybe you think that there could be something to it?
And if it's not scientifically proven, does it mean for you that it's not real?
(I personally don't believe in, or care about TK)
And another question. If someone offered to initiate you into reiki, would you accept and see for yourself?

Keep up the great work :)

RE: RE: Reiki

What do I think about Reiki?
I think you already know the answer to that, I think it's nonsense. I go along with the entry in Wikipedia. Lots of people may practice it but it has no scientific proof whatsoever and clinical trials also failed to show any benefit at all, just the opposite was concluded, it is not recommended to assist healing.
It's one of those things that some people believe in because they want to, regardless of the total lack of any evidence to support it. However, if someone is ill and they think it is making them better, so what? As long as they continue to take their prescribed medicine and are not being conned out of any money.

RE: RE: Reiki

Ok, so you think it's nonsense. So did I. I did not "want to believe".
I'm not surprised by your answer, but I was hoping for a different one. I think you are a very intelligent person, and it makes me a bit sad that you would dismiss something because it is not scientifically proven.

We are very far from proving and explaining everything, and as for the clinical tests, maybe the results were bad because there was someone measuring it, "an observer". :) Just kidding, but it's not impossible.

So tell me, if a reiki master came to your house and offered to initiate you, just for fun, and you accepted(would you?), and felt the energy, would you change your mind?

I don't want to come across as some kind of reiki fanatic, because I'm far from that, but it's hard to say that something doesn't exist when your body feels it.

Apart from that, I'm glad you enjoy living in Spain, it's my birth country and I go there every summer. I live in Croatia now, you should visit it if you haven't been here yet, it's not far and tourists seem to like it a lot.

Best regards

RE: Reiki

Hi,
In your reply you said "and it makes me a bit sad that you would dismiss something because it is not scientifically proven.". I find it necessary to take that stand because otherwise where would we be? Would I have to believe in telekinesis, levitation, mind reading, remote viewing, crystal healing, etc. etc?
I think reiki 'works' if the subject believes it will. I don't think for one minute it can cure cancer, but I am sure it makes some people feel better. We all know a placebo can make people feel better and with reiki I think its the same.
No, I wouldn't bother to try it, not because I have a closed mind - I don't - but people will often use that if I disagree with them, but because it is so subjective. I would no doubt feel something, but what does that prove? I used to practice yoga, and could slow down my heart rate, lower my blood pressure clear my mind and imagine I was floating out of my body. I wasn't of course, it just felt like it, again its very subjective which is why I prefer scientific evidence because that is not subjective.
So, yes, I am sure reiki can work to some extent, but what does that prove? Is it really reiki or is the power of our own mind?

RE: Reiki

I have no knowledge of Reiki or what it is supposed to accomplish.

I can however tell you that chemical messengers are sent by the brain through the body depending on the mood or emotional state we are experiencing.

Stressor chemicals are associated to emotional states of fear, sadness, depression, pessimism, so called negative states.

These chemicals deplete the bodies natural resources to heal itself, i.e. by way of or immune systems. They also stress or organisms unaturally, and over time can impact us harmfully.

Man once believed that all disease (dis ease) was exogenic. (caused by factors from outside the organism)

But we now know that a host of disease can be caused endogenically (derived internal from the organism).

So, for better or worse, you are waht you think.

RE: Reiki

Mr. Mayes,
After doing some research on the internet, I have become more aware of the need for scientific evidence on various matters. I was surprised at the number of people claiming to be able to do one thing ore another in order to promote themselves, get money etc., without evidence to support that. A lot of seriously deluded people.
And so I concluded that next time I'd better keep my thoughts on reiki to myself to avoid sounding like one of them. All I can say to my defense is that my experience with reiki has left me with a deep feeling that there is "something more" to life, it changed my perspective on life a bit, so I guess sometimes I feel the need to share that. Anyway, I don't care if it's called reiki or the power of our own minds, I appreciate it all the same.
Thank you for your time :)

RE: Reiki

Thanks. By the way I'm 29, and a mum to a 2,5 year old girl. Although being mature sometimes has nothing to do with age, some people that post messages here are just kids :)
