Simply Amazing

I had posted this already on another message board, I think the one where you can rate the site, but anyways this board seemed to be a little more popular : ). So here are my comments from the other message board(with some additions):

First, I would like to say that I was completely dumbfounded when I typed in "theories meaning of life" into Google that I found this website so quickly. I have rarely been so quickly and perfectly satisfied. This website was everything I was searching for. As I am still very young (only 18; a freshman at the University of Michigan) I have just begun to realize the signifance, beauty, complexity, and importance of life and the universe itself. I find it funny how so many people don't even realize how strange the world truly is. The fact that I am translating my thoughts into words and typing them onto a computer right now is extraordinarily bizarre in itself. How can so many not realize how crazy and mysterious the universe is. And even crazier yet is that we are the universe. It is quite an amazing experience this thing we call life. Just try to realize thaat right now we are at some random place and time in the universe, soaring around a sun, which is soaring around a galaxy which is hurdling through space itself.
This website provides detailed insight into nearly every interesting topic I wish to explore. While I was reading through this website I found it very interesting how many of my personal ideas and opinions of these subjects were in perfect unison with Keith's. While I certainly did not agree with "all" of the information presented in this website, that is perfectly okay and expected.
This brings up another interesting point I would like to make. I do not understand why people (such as others who have commented on this website)can get so heated and angry at each other for believing different ideas. Why does it matter to that someone else believes something differently than you? I believe this is one of the major problems plauging society today. While, of course, discussion and debate is needed in order to progress and evolve it simply does no good to "fight" and argue without reason over these topics. You can't make someone believe the same things as you when they are certain they are right, no matter how much evidence you show them because they will always deny they are wrong. It just seems foolish to me that we waste our time with pointless arguments that can never be won. Why can't we all just marvel in the universe we live in and the fact we are alive at all and discuss these fascinating subjects logically and with maturity. But anyways sorry for the sidetrack there, I just thought it was necessary to make this point.
I would just like to thank you Keith for creating this wonderful website. You have broadaned my way of thinking and helped reinforce ideas I already had about our universe. The universe is simply amazing. Once again, thanks and keep up the good work!

RE: Simply Amazing

I'm alot like you too. I'm only seventeen, and I've been discovering the same things you have been. You find the things that people may find extremely simple to be incredibly complicated (Writing on this message board). When I first discovered this sight too, about six months ago i think, I also realized how similar keith and I were.

I've been having these philisophical thoughts probably longer than you have, and I've learned the your mind will continuosly change. We are only young, and our views in life will cahnge dramatically. For instance, I first discovered this sight, believing that telekinesis was possible. Very soon afterward, I discovered that It almost definatly isn't. My view of God is also continuosly changing, and I'm still not able to find completely solid ground in my mind of what I think of God.

I can tell you one thing though that I've discovered. What the most important thing in life really is. And that is love. Having someone understand and love you for who you are. Science and discovering, or whatever you may want to do with your life is great. But true happiness is what will make life worth while. And I truly believe that this happiness can only be achieved by finding true love.

It's nice to find someone close to my own age, who shares a very similar mindset of me. The universe is an amazing place, and we will never know all of its secrets, thats something we have to accept.

RE: Simply Amazing

I also find it pretty cool when I was reading through this site that I saw someone very close to my own age as well. I to struggle with the concept of God. I definitely don't believe the traditional story of most of the major religions becuase it simply doesn't make sense. People in those times used God as a way to explain the things they could not understand. But that doesn't mean I dont think there is some sort of force or presence or something at least that can be felt throughout the universe. When you take the time to look around at the beauty of nature and all its wonders I just can't accept that it all happened for no particular reason. I don't know if I'm right or wrong but I wouldn't want to think that live for no purpose and its just a random occurence of events that led us to this point. I mean just take our emotions for example. Like you said how we can experience love, hate, anger, joy, sadness, excitement and every other strange feeling when we merely a particularly complex arrangement of atoms? I believe that life is something special; something different. As Keith discussed in his page about computer "self-awareness" complexity cannot be the only thing that determines life. There must be something else that we simply don't understand or can't understand about life that makes us the way we are. I think life has a purpose, not just human life becuase at the rate we are evolving we definitely won't be "humans" for long. But to me its kind of awesome how when in the future people will look back at this period of our evolution and view it as the real turning point in life. Imagine an exponential graph that slowly increases over a long period of time then suddenly bolts upward increasing exponentially over a very short period of time. We are right at the cusp of that curve and I think our future descendents will always look back at this point in history and view it as the dawn of a new age. That is way beside the point I was making earlier but still it just fascinates me, the time were living in now.

RE: Simply Amazing

I also used to believe that there had to be more to the universe. That something connects all of us. But as time passed, my view of this changed. I began realizing that the only reason I believed that was to make my self happy, because I wanted the universe to be that way. Of course, this is what most beliefs are. I'm not saying that I'm right or wrong, we'll probably never know, but I accepted the possibility that the universe and life could be just a series of random events, chemical reactions, single cell organisms, and evolution to what we are today. Human emotions, as you brought up, seem incredible, but they could be, and probably are a result of our basic instincts, just more complex. All to simply reproduce and survive. Obviously, humans have come to the point where that isn't the main goal anymore, our minds have changed, and we developed a new purpose of life that sets us apart from other species, the purpose to learn and discover, and always want to learn more and discover more.

I thought almost exactly as you did about a year ago, and I look at how much my views have changed. And thats simply incredible to me. I also liked how you made the comparison between our evolution and an exponential graph, and I do believe we are evolving faster. If not by the way we look, but by our minds.

Of course, these are some of my views now, but as I said earlier I'm sure they will change again.

'we waste our time with pointless arguments that can never be won."

You will be drawn to it, you will ingnore it, you will learn about it, and in the end, it will be the only thing you can think about.
