tOdd getting older

I have my own thoughts on getting older. I'm about two years older than tOdd, and I find it interesting to be in the position in relation to popular culture that the older people were in when I was a mere whelp.

For instance, at my age, 37, I am at the point where it I might regard, say, Cyndi Lauper and Duran Duran the way someone who was my age now when I was, say, 17, might have regarded The Mamas and Papas and The Beatles.

My point is that now I know what it's like to see something that I grew up with relegated by the next generation to the annals of pop culture history. I don't think of Ah-Ha's song "Take On Me" as this ancient pop song, but a guy who's 18 years old probably does.

Conversely, I do think of The Mamas and The Papas song "California Dreamin'" as an important piece of pop music history, while someone currently approaching the age of sixty likely remembers the time when the song reached number four on the Billboard charts, more than a year before I was even born.

As a teenager, I could hardly conceive of the music of the 1980s becoming an historical artifact, and by the 1990s I found the music of the '80s to be an embarrassment.

You know, I don't think I'm getting my point across very well. I need to retool this essay. Sorry you wasted your time reading it.

I can totally relate to Bowling For Soup's current hit "1985." I love the line that says When did Motley Crue become classic rock?

I don't know what sparked your essay, but I love the song California Dreamin! It is one of the best songs, ever!

My essay is more or less in response to tOdd's latest What's Happening column, where he describes remembering what was going on 25 years ago.

I just watched the Bowling For Soup video for the first time last night, and thought it was pretty funny.

It's hard to believe that 1985 was almost 20 years ago. In ten more years it will have been thirty years ago, and Marty McFly's kids will have to go back and set things straight for HIM!

The video is great! I love them dressed up like the chicks from Robert Palmer's video. She doesn't have a yellow SUV though...what is up with that?

Maybe the husband took the yellow SUV.

Your "name" is GIRLUWANT but how do I know that you're a girl I want?

Maybe I should be FLYINGPOLYPUWANT... how would you like that?

I had to explain this last week...it is a DEVO song! I don't think that everyone wants me...not an ego trip, just a DEVO fan.

I suppose I'll eventually have to explain what a flying polyp is.

It's "I can't get no satisfaction," not "I can't get me no satisfaction."
I'm sixteen years old and I listen to classic rock (not Motley Crue), so it's going to be even stranger for me when I get older. When I'm 35, yound children will laugh and say I listen to grandpa music. When I'm 80, most of the music I listen to now (and probably will still be listening to then) will be 100-130 years old.
Wow.

To Almighty Doer of Stuff:

I was referring to Devo in the above post.

See if you can find their version of 'Satisfaction.'

That's how they sing it...

"I can't get me no... satis FAC tion..."

You'll see what I mean.

I can't find the Devo version on WinMX, so I'll just assume the Rolling Stones version is better. Which it probably is. Because they are the Stones and they kick ass.
My favorite band is still the Beatles though.

No doubt the Stones' version is better. Devo was just goofin' around with it.

(Just sitting here remembering Devo!) Sad but true. Being in my 30s has brought the reality of aging close to me this year too. :( I always liked the Cure. Where are they now I wonder?

RE: tOdd getting older

Since I mainly knew the Devo version, it is really difficult for me to sing a long with the Rolling Stone's version. It is such a different beat! I like them both, but of course I like Devo's better.
