| Posted By: StarlightDancer Posted On: Nov 8, 2004 Views: 647 | German accents I'm sick of the German accents in the manga because they simply aren't realistic - the only Germans who would actually say "very vell" are the Bavarians - a group which is not representative for all Germans, just because they don't speak proper German either. And many German terms are false - in the third manga volume, the TV news text concerning the news from Rio is NOT about Rio in any way - it's about the history of zeppelins and the crash of the Hindenburg. Maybe it was the only German text to be found in Japan and only copied. |
| Posted By: Zahmira Posted On: Nov 7, 2004 Views: 686 | Sad This whole thing is making me feel very sad. Yes, I do consider myself a Hellsing fan. No, I am not a child. Just because I don't have as strong an opinion as some does not make me a child. If you do feel as strongly as Phineas about the Hellsing manga, write to Dark Horse. However, they will not retranslate the manga, it's just not worth the time and money to do so right now. If you like other online translations better, then read those! If you don't like those either, read it in the original Japanese. There are many options available. Don't buy the manga from Dark Horse if you really think it's that bad. It is possible to be a Hellsing fan not be upset with the poor translation. Translations get screwed up all the time, in every anime and manga. It's something that I've gotten used to. It's something that I've accepted. |

| Posted By: Erin Posted On: Nov 6, 2004 Views: 711 | Replies Yes, Phineas, I mean you. You have Stampede thoroughly bested in terms of logic, but your insults (maybe s/he hasn't heard any of this logic before, after all; this doesn't make him/her stupid) make people reluctant to agree with you. If he refuses to listen after a patient explanation, then and only then may you accuse him/her of being an idiot. You're right. S/he's wrong. This does not give you a license to abuse him/her. And it doesn't even have anything to do with Bush and Kerry. o_O |
| Posted By: Ryu Posted On: Nov 6, 2004 Views: 679 | Re: "Well..." I don't think you should discredit Dark Horse that much... I mean, it's not like the manga is a horrible dub(like yugioh turned out to be...). It really isn't that bad. Maybe I should pick up a translation from Young King Ours...is there really that much of a difference? Oh. I support Bush more than I supported Kerry. Now don't flame me for it...--0 It's just there's some people here who really don't like Bush. Thought I'd bring my own opinion out into the open. Erin didn't make any rude comments about him though. I guess she's one of the few who can respect other peoples opinions... |
| Posted By: Phineas Posted On: Nov 6, 2004 Views: 694 | Well... |
| Posted By: Zahmira Posted On: Nov 5, 2004 Views: 692 | Slang? I never even noticed that she used any slang. Accents? I like them. I only have a tiny issue with the German accent. The "W"s are pronounced like "V"s as they should be. But "V"s should be "F"s, not "W"s. But that's just nitpicking. I've never had any issues with Anderson being Scottish or there being anything wrong with his accent. But bugs me more is when people think he's Irish... And this is nothing to fight over. |
| Posted By: Spoonerism Posted On: Nov 5, 2004 Views: 687 | British Slang R0x0rs Lol, the more I read the more I giggle. I quite like the slang, but only when really needs be. Being a brit myself, it always warms my heart to see our fine, if a bit ****e, language used in such ways. Especially when Integra's compares herself to Ol' Maggie Thatcher in the first book. I wet myself with laughter. And the scottish and German thing. To be honest, it's not that bad. Trying to write such complex and really hard to understand (especially with the thick scottish accent) dialect is really hard. Still it's pretty good and I likey, just as long as Integra doesn't start shouting out "Wateva, Minger!" I am cool with it... although I still think Seras should have an essex accent. Muwahahahahahaa |
| Posted By: Ryu Posted On: Nov 5, 2004 Views: 654 | O_o Why is everyone arguing over it? It's not really a big deal. Not all the accents can be perfect, since it's just a manga. They don't have to use all the slang either. Who says Anderson can't be called Anderson? What's the big deal? |
| Posted By: Erin Posted On: Nov 5, 2004 Views: 649 | Sigh The family name Anderson originated in Strathspey, located in Scotland. "Frog" is a slang term for "Frenchman" - kind of like "Brit" or "Yankee." Women are addressed as "Sir" in real life, although Nazis don't use vampires in reality. And throwing around insults is no way to win an argument. |
| Posted By: Angel_Fish Posted On: Nov 5, 2004 Views: 654 | And one more note... Oh, and Phineas? Anderson is an -ENGLISH- surname, NOT Scottish. |
| Posted By: Angel_Fish Posted On: Nov 5, 2004 Views: 644 | ????? Okay...take a deep breath everyone. Granted, it's annoying to struggle to read obtuse accents and deal with the 'proper' titles at the same time, but aren't we just reading all of this for fun? If we can wrap our minds around the possibility of a vampire-hunting organization in England, Nazis using vampires to take over the world and a gun-toting, sarcastic vampire working for one to kill the other, can't we accept a woman being called Sir? Dark Horse doesn't spend the time on the manga that we do, nor Pioneer Animation on the anime, simply because they're just the producers. The only way you're going to end up with the kind of nitpicky in-depth argument which seems to be going on here is between fans. Hell, if you look at the cover of the first manga, Alucard's Casull has 'Burn Clockwork Giant Pandas' on it, and I'm pretty sure his glove says 'Television,' (but that one's hard to tell.) So...let's just enjoy the stuff as it comes and not work ourselves up into a foaming frenzy over each other's perceptions, okay? Consider it exploring a well-known and loved world through new eyes. And what's up with the 'frog' comment? |

| Posted By: Stampede Posted On: Nov 4, 2004 Views: 642 | More grammar and things That's as far as things like what it says on your mail goes. Wikipedia says that the female equivalent, Dame, is used within the order of chivalry. In other words, the Knights of the Round Table would certainly be using it (especially since they probably would take any chance they could to slight her, and not giving her the same title as the rest of them fits fairly well, ja?) Likewise, Alucard might use it to infuriate her. |
| Posted By: Angel_Fish Posted On: Nov 4, 2004 Views: 649 | Technically... Actually, you can use both titles. 'Dame' I've seen used in several history texts, but *g* usually I've only seen it used in D&D. |
