FF3j

hands down. I'll use the last area of the game as an example, you enter an area with no save points, all teh random monsters are REALLY REALLY NASTY, you fight 4 bosses in each corner of this large area, any of which could have been the last boss and you'd have been satisfied (alot harder than Kefka or Sephroth...) then you can fight the last boss which is REALLY NASTY.

I was lucky, early in the game I found that by making my charaacters black belt they'd gain more KP when they gained levels and almost the entire game I leveled like this and during the last battle I discovered I could change equipment in battle without spending my turn so I eqeuipped 2 shields and healed, then 1 shield and attacked, then shields and healed (yes I was down to 1 character in the the last leg of the battle.)

anyone FFT gets 2nd place for the reasons listed above in other people's posts. I'm currently finishing up FFX, the bonus bosses are nasty but Anima is worse than KoRT. 99,999 damage with it's normal attacks, in FF3j you had no cheap tricks like that. FF2j wasn't so hard, FF4 FF5 and FF6 were actually pretty easy despite a few hard areas, FFTa I'll not even go into (way to easy), and while FFVII had some nice bonus bosses most of the game wasn't to hard. I still haven't played FFIX and I'm only halfway through FFVIII so I can't say much about those, O.K. yes I can, what I played of FFVIII was so easy I was bored to tears on the random encounters. Yeah as much as I love the suiken Densetsu series FFA really doesn't count. Am I leaving anything out, oh yeah my first RPG, MQ, that one was easy to.

Optional Bosses

It's probably difficult to make a decision when you include the Optionals- pretty much all FFs have at least 1. In my case, Emerald has almost brought me to tears in the following manner:

3 days of leveling up materia and getting ready: I decide I'm going to kill Emmy without using KotR, because it's too cheap.

5 days of humiliating defeats from Aire Tam Storm:
I find out that you can lower the damage it does by dequipping materia. I do so.

About 2 Months Later: I decide to hell with honor, I'm going to beat him the boring cheapass way. I cast KotR. Repeatedly. About 8 times. I mimic the same.

HE STILL DOESN'T DIE.

Mathemtical/Logical Part of my Brain: Wait a second... 7000 damage times 13 hits... 91000 times 16 KotRs... HOLY CRAP HE'S GOT OVER 5000000 HP!!!!

(Emmy kills me)

---

FF 10's optionals optionals are pretty nasty too. :)

FF Tactics

I've gotta go with FF Tactics on this one. FF 1 was hard, yes, but the battles in Tactics became mind-numbing after a while. Especially trying to save f$&^ing Rafa on top of Riovanes Castle when she has absolutely no self-preservation tactics. Golgorand Execution Site was a pain in the ass as well; even after Gafgarion was defeated, you're still outnumbered almost 2 to 1. And the 1-on-1 battle against Weigraf *shudder* I don't even wanna talk about that. That mission alone has permanently scarred me for life.

Neo Exdeath can be made easier!

Simply bring a Chemist with Mix. Mix a Potion with a Dragon Fang for Dragon Power. Use this on anyone for a 20 level boost! Watch as your attacks do much, much more than they should! He'll be dead in no time!

Well....

FF: The War Mech...demonic Robot of DOOM...

FF2j: Haven't Played it
FF3j: Haven't Played it

FF4j/FF4 Hard Type: Every battle for the special Weapons at the last Dungeon...God those lasted me half an hour to an hour each.

FF2/FF4 Easy Type: I got lazy in this game, but I thought Cecil's battle with himself was harder in this one...for some reason.

FF5: Gilgamesh...then later Ex-Death & Neo Ex-Death, he could problably take on Ultimecia (3rd form) no problem.

FF6: Atma Weapon, Ultros (The Last time), Kefka's Final Boss Form...Kefka could take on Safer Sephiroth I bet.

FF7: Ultima Weapon, Ruby Weapon, Emerald was kinda easy cause I had all I needed before fighting him. The Missing Number boss ****ed me off several times. Genova Synthesis...that's a mean bitch there. All the Sephiroth forms were TOO EASY.

FF8: Omega, That ****in Krysta boss at the begginin of Ultemecia Castle, Ultimecia's 3rd to last form, & Adel when she is absorbing Rinoa at the end of Lunatic Pandora & Disc 3. That bitch was hard.

FF9: Ozma, Trance Kuja, The Guardians, Lich, Garland, & Hades.

FFX: Everything in the Arena. Period. Every boss in that game is UBER Easy.

FFX-2: Every boss is damn near impossible in this game!

FFT:
Golgorand Execution site
-All you have to do is immobolize Gafgarion until all the other enemy units are dead. Easy.

Culery Underground Level 4
-Where you get Reis (Dragon). This is hard as hell until you get your self a Lancer or 2, or send Agrias to take care of most of the trash.

Roof of Riovanes Castle
-If that Rafa NPC wasn't such a stupid ****...I had to make Ramza a Ninja with some Germinas Boots to protect her. I sent a Samurai to cover Ramza, then had Agrias & a Time Mage handle the Assasins.

Limberry Castle
-I ended up killing him with all my Characters Blood Sucked...At least I got Ultima for Ramza in the previous battle.

The Dycedarg Battle
-Killing Dycedarg is easy as hell, in fact, Zalbag practically does it for you. Then he turns to his Zodiac form...now THAT's a bitch to kill...took me 45 minutes to 1.5 hours with Ramza as a Lancer, Agrias as a Lancer, Orlandu as himself, Meliadul as herself, & Rafa being the resident Priest.

FFTA: Haven't played it, & I never want to

FF11: Haven't played it, & I don't think i want to

Icky choice

FF1: Hadn't learned to scale very well, slow action, needs lots of leveling. I didn't choose this because they didn't know at the time it was hard

FF3: Dear god. Big Rat, Salamander, Garuda, Splitting cave, Bahamut, Zande, Ahriham, 2-headed dragon, Echidna, Ahriham, Dark Cloud. Take your pick.

FF4real: There's a reason it's called Hard-type you know. Icky hard fights.

FF5: Insane. Neo-Exdeth can take any other FF Final boss without really trying.

FF8: Not that hard actually, some tricky fights but none of them were really what I'd call hard.

FF9: Beatrix you suck. So do you Necron. Necron could give Neo-Exdeth a run for his money. Ozma puts Emerald and Ruby weapon to shame, causing so much more anguish with so much less HP.

FF10: If you abuse Aeons then it's quite easy. If not you'll have a lot of trouble with cheesy bosses like Seymour.

FFT: Tied with FF5 for Insane difficulty. If you thought Golgorand was painful I can guarantee screams of anguish the moment you hit Riovanes castle, burn in hell Belias.

FFTA: If you aren't really strong then you'll be in considerable. You'll also be in considerable trouble if you aren't lucky. For example if Fafnir and co are smart you could be facing an onslaught of Breath of God and Roullete. Get lucky and it's Demi and wing hit. The harder bosses(vs. Babus and Ex-death, versus llednar, versus Le-Grimoire) could cause problems if you aren't very strong. Especially Le-Grimoire, if her toadies use Star Cross and she follows it up with Advent you're screwed beyond imagining.

FFA shouldn't be on the list. Seiken Densetsu is so not an FF it isn't funny.

FF8

Final fantasy 8 is the hardest because every time your party gains levels, SO DO THE FLIPPIN MONSTERS! That's not fair! Some of us like to perform "overkill" on our enemies, some of the later games in the series were nice enough to point out when that happens and i always get that because i level up so much, but in ff8? NO!!!!!! of course not! because the monsters level up too. the guy who thought that idea up must have been drunk or something, why in the flippin heck would you make monsters level up when your people do, I MEAN SERIOUSLY! that game would be 50 times better if i could fight ultimiecia or omega on level 100 without them having a zillion hit points by being at level 100 too.

Hah, Golgorand!

I remember that. I lost it several mazillion (use fake numbers when you can't remember then) times, then just trained like crazy. It's the only way to win that game, seriously. Everything's insanely easy, and then suddenly *POOF!* You're in charge of protecting an NPC with a high movement rating who thinks it is a good idea to attack an enemy with Hamedo.

I still would have to say Final Fantasy, though. Its fights were designed like a Pen and Paper RPG, where four PCs against an equal challenge would nearly die, 'cept that Final Fantasy made random encounters extremely common while D&D expected naught but the chance of an encounter once an hour, which would be 600 6-second rounds, each of which would take several out-of-game minutes to settle. Those were the days.

Final Fantasy!!

Oh my.. Final Fantasy, I'm running around with my party of (apparently) underleveled fighters and mages, and BAM! Out comes this stupid mech-thing that obliterates my party. I was like "W...T...F!?!" and got angry at my Nintendo. >_>;;

FF tactics advance

Except for the final battles, I figured that this one is the hardest since it makes you think. The laws aren't always in you favor even though you can change them. As for other final fantasies, these are my top picks:

FF6- Atma weapon
FF7- Esmerald weapon
FF8- no one really, maybe those red dragons...
FF9- for real, no one
FFX- everything in the monster arena.
FFX-2 - Trema

The Golgorand Site of DEATH...

That's what cinched the vote for FFT for me- there are at least ten battles in that game that are nerve-breakingly hard, starting with Golgorand Execution Site.

Others on that list:

Gate of Lionel Castle
Inside of Riovanes Castle
Roof of Riovanes Castle
Bed Desert
Bethla Garrison's Sluice

(I didn't keep Orlandu, knowing that he makes everything else too easy.)

Inside Limberry Castle
Nelveska Cursed Isle
Lost Sacred Precincts
VOYAGE (Deep Dungeon)
END (Deep Dungeon)

Most other FFs have one or two truly hard battles:
FF4- Baigan and Evilwall
FF5- Omega and Twin Tania
FF6- None, really
FF7- Rapps and Emerald
FF8- A lot (but less than FFT)
FF9- Tiamat and Shinryu
FF10- Seymour Flux and Yunalesca. Actually, pretty much all the Seymour battles were fun and challenging.

FFXI

If you look at FFXI of course it'll have the hardest battles... practically every single area is unforgiving if you screw up too much in fighting or are grouping with bad people. Battles aren't just mindless hacking, they require forethought and planning (what to fight, how often to fight it, where to camp while you're fighting, the party setup to fight things...)

Even at the maximum level reachable in the game, you still can't go everywhere without running into very difficult battles. You can't say the same for leveling up to 99 in most FF's and walking around the world.

And looking at Weapon-like battles, you have a couple in each FF game past 7, and warmech in FF1... Then you look at FFXI and have fights against Behemoth King, Nidhogg, Fafnir, Apeshdelone, Kirin... and Dynamis, which is an area with battles so difficult you need multiple Alliances to have a CHANCE at success.

No game in the FF series has challenged me more then FFXI at points. And a whole lot of points for that matter.
