Need 64MB - external SD card is not an alternative

Comparing 64MB RAM vs SD Card is like talking about computer RAM vs Hard Disk. When RAM is low, hard disk just isn't the right alternative!

I have TT1 and am suffering from low memory limit. I do have a 256MB SD Card, and am running some apps off from the SD card; but this is really bad. not to mention that when SD Card is removed (or replaced with another card) I'll lose the capability of using those apps, but most importantly it's damn slow loading files or apps from the SD card.

My AvantGo database is on SD card and everytime I open AvantGo I had to wait for 20 seconds or so before I can click on any link. Ever since I moved AvantGo to SD, I rarely use it; and between AvantGo and Palm, I opt for AvantGo. I'm losing my patience. :(

Some were right, with the price of Treo 650 I'm fully qualified as a Power User and have the right to be "demanding" (and I don't think 64MB is at all demanding!)

Looks like I had to switch to a PocketPC in order to get everything in one with sufficient memory at lower price. A "regular user" model of PPC would satisfy my need of a Palm "Power User". Come on Palm, TT5 has let me down by not including WiFi or a basic Camera, don't let me down again with Treo 650!

64MB not far enough

If you ask me Treo 650 should have 128MB ram plus the memory fixes. In addition I'd like to see a mini HD drive with 20+ Gig built in. Should have at least as much space for music as iPOD. Add on top of that the "included" capability to play back MPEG 4 movies with 4-5 stored on the HD like the new palm sized media stations. Palm could then set up an audible.com like/iTunes site specifically for movies that can be played on Treo650. Just a few thoughts...

Even dream devices sometimes fall very short...

Well, I've been eying on 650 since they released the 600 last year. Only thing which kept me buying one was the not availability of the Treo 600 here in this part of the world Sri Lanka and the low resolution.

Now since the release of the 650 I've asked one of my friend over there in US to reserve (buy) one for me.

I've been using CLIE from the beging and I love their 320x320 screens I am consumed by that and cannot go back to 160 which partly kept me from buying any Palm devices untill now.

Now SONY is out of the game I need to upgrade my CLIE but because of this treo 650 NVFS issue now I asked my friend not to get a Treo untill this thing solved. So come on.. Add 64MB or 128MB if it is NVFS before I even consider buying a another Palm. Even the basic PDA got 128 nowadays. And it's cheap. I am happy with the CLIE unless the GSM capabilities and I probably will get a PocketPC with GSM receiver if you don not come out clean in this.

So Mr Palm, I love your OS and I have been using them for the last 4 years now. It is not hard for me to give up the love affair since PocketPCs too have become pretty girls now.

Heads should roll...

Someone needs to get canned for this. It's bad enough PalmOne didn't include the now BARE MINIMUM industry standard 64MB, but then to add insult to injury included a sloppily coded filesystem.

I was ready to rush out and upgrade to the 650 (I have a 600 now) for the new screen, bluetooth, etc etc. But if PalmOne doesn't release a 64MB version (even if they label it the 651 and charge $50 more) I'll be looking somewhere else to replace my 600.

A complete shame. Whoever signed off on 32MB of memory needs to be canned immediately.

Kick in the pants for app developers

Perhaps this memory issue will encourage developers to make their apps work off of external memory cards.

Treo 650 Memory

What is the big deal with PalmOne providing extra memory for the treo 650? I could understand if Palmone was a startup company with limited funds, but they are not. Other smartphones have 128MB worth of internal memory, example the PPC-6601. In conclusion, what I really want to say is: goodbye PalmOne, if you don't want to listen to your customer base, then there are better products out there.

128 MB SD? Weak response.

After owning a Treo 300 as well as a 600, I have to say that I feel betrayed. We have been eagerly anticipating a great phone from p1 only to be disappointed by something that I consider reminiscent of the Apple III...a marketing disaster. How can a company of this size and stature not have the foresight to address the 650's target market--corporate power users? With an investment of over $600 when it's said and done, it seems foolish to have to worry about memory concerns. PalmOne had better be concerned with the competition, who are making phones with QWERTY keyboards that are looking better all the time. The PPC-6601 has 128 MB of internal memory and my full attention following this debacle.

Bad PIM development

I have a Palm (third one) and want to buy the Treo 650. So I calculated the dataloss. I have now 166 files (applications and datafiles) which consume 4 MB of memory. When I started reading this article "What is NVFS" ( http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Pa lm_External2001,case=obj(35222) ) I calculated the dataloss. So I thought, every file consume a multiple of 512Bytes memory blocks. So in the worst case I can add 512Bytes minus 1 bit. This would be 166 * 512Bytes = 83KByte. So why the commotion? But when I continued reading I read that the standard PIM datafiles are not saved as ONE file, but PER RECORD. If you read the article the dataloss isn't about 33% but can be up to 400%. This I call BADD PIM development. If they store all records for Contacts in one file and if they do the same for the others, the dataloss will be neglectable. See my first calculation (83KB at 4MB memory use). My conclusion is that we are better of with a good patch than more memory. That's why they offer a 128MB SD card (400%) because 64MB is also not enough.

Treo 650

I understand about this memory issue. Not smart on PalmOne, however, there are people out there that are like me that will buy the 650 just because it is the latest and greatest. Just a few days ago, the host was saying it's the world's smartest phone. Now many are saying they won't buy it. At the end of the day, the largest percentage saying they would not buy it will own one. I don't think you would be on this board if you were not a big Treo fan no matter what. I have the phone and it is a far cry above the 600. Just look at the screen and you will buy.

600 or 650?

Since it looks like P1 isn't about to put another 32 MB of memory in the 650's, my question is this: Is the screen resolution so bad on the 600 that it's not a good device?
I mean, since it would now appear that the 600 has 8 MB more of memory than the 650, is the 650 really that much better than the 600?
Your opinions on this will be very helpful.
Thanks

Add a higher memory. more value to our money.

Everything's gone up & technology has changed so fast. Why keep yourself at the back of the race, when you can actually win it. You have a lot of followers, but the new Treo 650 has to show to us it's value & our money's worth. We cannot live by the old ways using a low memory where everyone else has kept up with the latest & the best in the market. An increase of memory will satisfy most of us, altogether with the developers. I do suggest to go for the highest memory available for internal use + SD card. Is Palmone/Palmsource willing to lose this Smartphone wars, or are they willing to win the race for tomorrow???

Yes

I was always going to buy it so I answered Yes/As Is, but I'm much happier that they're going to fix the ROM to use the memory better.
