Not to be mean but what GREAT career can come from a degree in creative writing other than writing for the Democratic party?

Syrgot:

If the writing thing doesn't work out, you can always go back to being "gay for pay".

Either way, the University of Arizona is a crappy school. By the end of it, you'll be spelling like Dragonkid.

Thanks everyone!!!!

Dole: This is an example of one of those times when it is hard to tell if its the real you or not. But to answer whomevers question it was, the career I do want is to be a teacher of poetry, and a novelist... well... I'd be happy just being a novelist if I could pull it off, but you gotta be realistic and know that making money in it is going to be a tough battle. The term "starving artist" was invented for a reason, but as long as I'm surviving on my art, I don't care if i'm hungry.

I figured it had to be a teaching job. You don't need a degree to write a novel. Roseanne Barr even wrote one. Personally I would rather be happy and rich as opposed to happy and starving but maybe that is just me.

What kind of novels are you going to write? If you say romance, I am going to reach through the monitor and choke you.

In A.P. English, after reading The Inferno we had to make our own diagram of hell, just a fun little weekend project. I did literary hell. Danielle Steel was one of the three souls inside Satan's mouth... so no; I'm not interested in romance. You do know that there is a difference between a 'Romance Novel,' and a novel whose plot is a love story though, right?

I never focus on just one genre though, I have definitely done fiction with a love stories in them though. Crime is endlessly intriguing though I've only worked in that genera once, but plan to again when I get another good idea. Character development and believability is a huge thing for me. It's sad that there are so many commercial writers out there who don't focus on that as much as they should.

By romance novels, I mean the kind with Fabio on the cover. I would add that reading Dragonmaster's blog is also literary hell.

I agree with you about characters in today's writing. There are better developed characters on this anonymous board than in most TV shows and movies. Crime stories, eh? How about one about a hit-and-run in West Virginia - Lord I apologize for that last joke and be with the pigmies in New Guinea

That's good to hear Dole, I am glad to know that you're not anti-love stories, but in fact anti-romance novels. I started writing a story that began with a hit and run... not in West Virginia... I think he was driving through Montana, havnt looked at it in a while. I didnt get very far with it though.

A good story can't be forced and since you don't have an editor breething down your neck, wait for it to come. How about comedy? One of the hardest things to write but if you can do it well, there is money to be made.
