bear cannisters

if DEC didn't remove so many lean-tos and restrict camping so much in the high peaks in the past 25 years maybe we wouldn't have this problem. this concentrated the bear problem even worse.
that being said i do agree to a point that cannisters could be a big help but not a total solution. $65 dollars each! talk about gouging. it would be nice to come with a solution for a cannister by making one from a metal container you could find around your house. i have an idea! do you?

cannisters

Stupid or careless people have caused the problem. I try to camp away from other people, such as lower summits, I have never had a problem. Simply avoid crowded areas. This is a true wilderness experiance.

canisters

Speaking of silly, all these previous comments are...

Requiring the canisters isn't about us - it is about the bears. Over the years, while we have encroached the bears territory for our recreation, they have become habituated to humans(humans who have been poor at hanging or otherwise protecting their food) and have become a "nusance". The bears who become too good at it, are then relocated or shot. By carrying a canister, you not only protect your food, but over time will reduce the bear/human interaction which protect the bears. Canisters are the only method proven safe and effective for this. The selfishness i have noted on this site is remarkable. This is the exact reason we need rules and regs and Summit Stewards. Obviously you had no idea where to walk up there, and the Steward was there to inform. A majority of wilderness backpackers are stupid and selfish. Get a bigger backpack Tardo. If you are backpacking overnight with all appropriate gear, you need a pack big enough to hold a canister anyway. Think outside yourself, and the need for canisters will make itself clear.

Bears

I feel that requiring bear cannisters is just silly. I totally agree that they are too pricey and too big. Here's an idea do it like we've always done sling your food up over a tree brach and let it be I have never had a problem doing it this way. I wish the government would just leave my one bit of peace alone. I mean really if they want to protect people or as they see us $$$Tax Dollars$$$ don't let the stupid ones in the woods end of story.

Bear Canisters

While the bear canisters DO work better than hanging your food, they are too big, heavy and much too expensive ($60+). Perhaps there is something that works as well as the canisters but is a little more realistic for backpackers. These canisters do not even fit in my backpack. I think this new bear canister law along with the campfire and many other camping and hiking regulations diminish the wilderness experience. I understand the need for rules and regulations in order to preserve this beautiful land, but I think it is getting a bit out of hand. It took me almost 30 minutes to read all the laws that pertain to the eastern high peaks zone. When I hiked Mount Colden the other day, there was a summit steward at the top telling me where to walk. I believe that this bear canister regulation is just the next step in preserving the land and ecosystem, while distroying the wilderness experience.

You don't have to be stupid for a bear to get your food. I used a fabric bear bag on a DEC provided steel cable at Marcy Dam and still lost everything. My canister gives me peace of mind and I don't have to search for tree limbs to throw over. Best money I've spent.

Requiring Bear Canisters

After bear canisters what will be next, how about requiring walking sticks or international orange clothing to make hikers safer. How about sneekers or barefoot only on on trails with the letter b in them. How about no food allowed in the high peaks during July and August. Do gooders leave us alone, we want the wilderness experience, if your stupid you loose your food.
