Future Treo

Palmone is soon to be renamed Palm. Future Treo should be named "convergent device one" Treo CD 1: Specs should include 1GB rom, 128MB ram, SDIO/MMC slot, 512MHz intel processor, solar cell and backup rechargable/removable battery, 262k colors, on screen VGA camera, 2.0MP external camera, 320 x 320 screen, BT 1.2 or higher, wifi, keyboard and overall thinner than Treo 650. Should maintain form factor in Treo 650.

Current Form Factor

I strongly vote for the current form factor. I keep my 650 in a Krussel case which zips around the bottom (to minimize the size I cut the belt clip mount off). It fits neatly in a pocket and the case keeps debris out of the unit and protects it from spills or sticky fingers.

The slider invites forign material and limits the options of effective cases. The mechanism is an added weakness and will ultimately get loose and sloppy.

For me a slightly thinner unit would be nice, and on the margin if the earpiece took up less space to allow for a slightly taller screen could help. The Treo is a great design so why introduce problems that to not exist. If you want a big display go buy a PC phone.

Treo 810

I really like the sliding keyboard. Most of the time you don't need it exposed. Lose the antenna and I think it's a formfactor which can really do the job of a phone, PIM, PSP and an Archos. If they put a hard drive in the thing I'd probably just die immediately from wanton gadget-lust.

New Treo Designs

The above mentioned designs are interesting. Still, as a Treo 650 owner, I feel that an 'enhanced' 650 (670?) would be perfect. The few tweeks it needs are ...

1. WiFi (built-in)
2. Eliminate the protruding antenna
3. More memory
4. Perhaps, a tad bit thinner.
5. A better camera.

Otherwise, I feel the Treo 650 hits the mark. If this 'Treo 670' came out, I be at the store the same day to purchase it. Also, I would be praising it from the roof tops. Until then, the 650 surely rocks.

Let's hope.

RE:

The 800 series may be the most likley to come next. But of those, the slider having 810 would be most likley. The Treo has been built on the strength of its keyboard and one handed navigation. For them to completly toss the keyboard would be too bold at this point. Also, you would need to keep it think for a good enough battery. I would think that the battery would be at least as good as the 650's. All good designs. Keep up the good work :)

Treo 710

Ah come on man, the whole purpose of the Treo in the first place is to eliminate the need for two or more gadgets. Reducing the size should be the ultimate concern of the designers and the mock-up 800 being bigger than the 650 defeats the purpose. Scale down the size and watch PalmOne's profits grow out the roof!!!

Just my $.02 though!!!

800 Series Treo

I think you are definately on to something with the Treo 800 series. I agree that the kybd is needed in todays environment and for the immediate future. So the sliding kybd model would suit todays Treo user. As alternative input mechanisms become more acceptable both technically and culturally, the migration to the no kybd version will be a better fit. Think of holding it eventually (for some tasks) as you would the personal media players and PSP. This would accommodate widescreen material and be a better display for GPS maps or anything else that needs a little more screen landscape.
