Too Expensive Keith Hudson

Your review sounds like it is your first exposure to Keith Hudson's singing. Now it's true that his singing on the LP Rasta Communication is more sublime. But all his vocals are brillant. He has one of the most original and sincere voices ever found on the planet.Too Expensive takes getting used to, though, I would say. Once you listen over and over several times you would not have these songs sung any other way. His personality burns through everything. Just as free jazz needs a trained ear and practice in listening so does Keith Hudaon. Once you "get it" his vocals are beautiful. Personally I will never get enough listens of Keith Hudson work. Of course Rasta Communication is good, but also check out his vocals on The Black Morphologist of Reggae/From One Extreme to Another. It takes the beginnings of Too Expensive to a higher level. I especially like It's Allright followed by Desiree. Never dis Hudson!

hudson - too expensive

I think you are a little unkind in your review here - sure, ok, it's not straight reggae, but that's what makes it beautiful. This album follows in three solid traditions: Jamaica's love of fusing reggae with everything else and especially funk/disco, Britain's love of trying to sell it, and Hudson's refusal to fit any kind of mold.

And while I wonder what Hudson would have to say about the work he did here, it should be noted that the backing band is then-Rhodesia's Otis Waygood, a blues-turned-progrock-turned-reggae band of jewish kids from Bulawayo.

The standouts for me here are 'smoking' which I would call straight reggae in the Keith Hudson style, and 'civilisation', along with its accompanying instrumental - there are a lots of funky reggae tracks out there, but this is one that I play for friends.
