Salieri's new opera has just finished its opening performance, and, after the emperor hangs a medal around Salieri's neck, proclaiming what he has just heard to be the best opera yet written, Wolfgang approaches Salieri, shakes his hand warmly, and effuses, "I didn't know music like that was possible. One hears such sounds, and what can one say, but 'Salieri!'?" |
