Internet Idiot

I suck at setting up internet. So Ive turned to you people for help because I know some of you know this stuff. My cable box is hooked up to a Hub, and I have Cat 5 running to this PC, and its working with no problems at all. I have Cat 5 running to my other computer and my whole world goes to hell. The internet wont work no matter what. I changed network cards, re-installed their drivers, try to Setup Network Connections over and over. We thought that our ex-roommate Kilgas did some techie thing to it because hes smart and would have this problem fixed in no time. So since we were unable to comprehend it. We formatted the hard drive and reloaded the OS. I had nothing on the computer yet anyway. Still isnt working.

My brother did something to it yesterday and on THIS computer something popped up and said there was a problem with letting another computer on the network. So then Im starting to think, Well, windows firewall (which i just thought of now) because we have a brand new Dell with XP Home. Im gonna try shutting off the firewall right now. I hope for the best. If that IS the problem, how do I let the firewall let my computer on. If it isnt it, then what the hell?

RE: Internet Idiot

One problem you might be experiencing is that if it is a true hub then it might not be accepting it. For broadband connections (cable or DSL) you should go with a router in order to access the internet with multiple computers. hubs are primarily used for inner-networking not global. Also, if you are using high speed (256k or higher) you might want to look into cat6 cables too. Cat5e is only rated to 100k (although it can hit up to 200k yet unstable while cat6 is rated to i think 1M) Its something i gotta do once i get the cash (only like 10-20 bucks per cable) Firewalls are a pain, every one is different and im not sure how you can get it to allow another comp onto the network

Well, this computer is hooked up to the Hub and through Cat5, and it goes alot faster than 256k, more like 550k, sometimes more. Your probably right about the Hub though.

Now that i shut off the Firewall, the connection thing on the other computer says "packets sent: 60...Packets received: 0"

RE: Internet Idiot

Yeah sounds like you need a router. Both comps can send, but only one can recieve meaning the hub aint letting them share. routers will swap the comps back and forth as needed to share the connection

RE: Internet Idiot

Try swapping the cables out. most routers need patch cables (it swaps the location of wires so the sending wire hits recieving on other spot) stuff like that. I cant remember the exact way to check on the labeling on wire to see, but if the other cable works then go to the store and find a new patch cable.

RE: Internet Idiot

I cant believe you have a hub like that for like home use, I was worris setting up my little domestic 4 port router when i got it.

adam, seriously, if I can make a suggestion, spend a bit extra and get a wireless (802.11g) router, even if you dont want wireless NOW its there incase yoiu do later. I bought my non-wirelss one a year or so ago and now regret it (thinging of now buying a wireless one) and the wireless card for the other PC's are pretty cheap also.

RE: Internet Idiot

thats the idea snrub, to get wireless...
but, none of this costs money, so we did all this first...eventually, and pretty soon, we will get wireless...we had it at our old apartment, and i dont think my brother can live without it much longer...

yeah it is definately the Hub...i dont know much about routers and Hubs...i cant find a router here at work, only a stack of hubs, like ten of them...
i guess we will have to buy one, they are only like 50 bucks, plus the corporate discount through work...like 24 at comp usa, so ppl say
