mattress shopping

Anybody have recommendation for a comfy mattress? I usually buy urine stained ones from salvation army so I have no clue what to get, looking for a new one. I wont feel bad if no one responds, I know this is a boring topic.

RE: mattress shopping

I have a posturepedic and I think it's the best thing that's ever happened to me. But that may just be because my old bed was the spare piece to my sister's old futon (1 1/2 ft wide, 3 feet long). So if you're used to the same crapy beds, a posturepedic would rock.

I bought my current mattress (which is fantastic) from Becks Bedding in Preston (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia).

Dont know if thats a bit out of your way or now.

Try Englander Laytex-tm Mattress, we have a cal king and it is the most comfortable beds I have slept on. The cal king mattress was only $1000 compared to a good posterpedic which can go up $3200 for a good one. For the Enlander you need to buy a box, not box springs, but a box that looks like box springs. With this mattress you do not need box springs. The mattress, they say, will last 30+ years. I think it is worth it. Hope this helps.

thanks guys - I was thinking of getting that tempurpedic mattress (you know the one that molds to your body) but it seems like it would get all hot and sweaty because of no airflow...

ahhh the mattress search. it's an annoying one because mattress salesmen aren't far from car dealers. We spent a few weeks searching and ended up buying on at one of those strip mall mattress stores. here's my tips:

1. decide how much you are willing to spend maximum (that's what mattress people ask you first off)
2. hit one of those mattress stores or dept stores and lay around on mattresses in your range (even try a few more expensive ones--those latex suckers are pricey but nice to try out)
3. use your bargaining powers - if the salesman doesn't budge on the mattress price then swindle free delivery - they will also take your old one away if you work it right.
4. make sure you can get a satisfaction guarantee on the quality of the mattress (it's usually 30 days)
5. don't be cheap, next to eating, sleeping is so important and you should wake up feeling rested and happy you made the purchase

We ended up with a queen one-sided pillowtop which means I don't have to flip it ever. It was around $800 which is about $200 more than we originally wanted to spend but we had them throw in delivery and a frame. One issue with the pillowtops, you need deep fitted sheets which are easy enough to come by.

It is a boring subject but you're good to ask around, it's a weird thing to shop for because you have to lay down and try to imagine yourself sleeping and stuff in front of some polyester dude (or dudette).

oh and we got a sealy. oh and one more thought! places like costco usually stock decent mattresses but you can't always try them out there so if you see what they carry, head to a display store that has them to try them out. costco will be most prices because you have to haul it away.

(consumer reports is a great source too)
