Stochastic Sampling?

I was thinking that aliasing has been a major problem for ray-tracing and ray-casting algorithms, and this problem is solved by stochastic sampling. Stochastic sampling is a discrete approach to antialiasing a Monte Carlo technique in which the image is sampled at appropriate nonuniformly spaced locations rather than at regularly spaced locations. This approach is inherently different from either supersampling or adaptive sampling, though it can be combined with either of them. Stochastic sampling can eliminate all forms of aliasing, including unruly forms such as highlight aliasing. Stochastic sampling theory tells us that with a regular sampling grid, frequencies higher than the Nyquist limit will alias. High frequencies appear as noise, not aliases this turns out to bother our visual system less! In stochastic sampling, every region of the image has a finite probability of being sampled. The shading calculations, which have traditionally been point sampled, are automatically antialiased with stochastic sampling, eliminating problems such as highlight aliasing. Another potential application is texture map sampling. Extended to distributed ray tracing, stochastic sampling also provides a solution to motion blur, depth of field, penumbrae, blurry reflections, and translucency. Stochastic sampling can be Integrated with different renderers: Ray tracing. It is just as easy to fire a ray one direction as another; Z-buffer; hard, but possible. Does anyone agree with me on this?

Enjoy the day.

RE: Stochastic Sampling?

We have better things to think about like:

Are Nick and Jessica having marital problems?

When are Tom and Katie getting married?

What has Hillary Duff done to her teeth?

Has Lindsay Lohan lost too much weight?

What is the best tooth-whitening product?

Is Angelina Jolie really dating Brad Pitt?

Is the price of gas going to keep going up?

Is my purse still in style?

How am I going to pay my $256.75 peeling-out ticket?

Which SPF should I use at the pool?

RE: Stochastic Sampling?

I must say that it is indeed quite perplexing as to the constant resistance to my attempts to raise more sophisticated topics for discussion within this group. I will concede that my writing is prosed in nature but I must stress that it still has a great deal of merit. I am reminded of an axiom that surmises small minds discuss people, average minds discuss events, and great minds discuss ideas.

I am here to help the masses of lower intellect that reside within to rise out of the primordial ooze they call their nugatory existence and expand their minds to a higher level of enlightenment. I am realistic in this endeavor and I do not expect any of you to reach my level of intelligence. I would just like to see some of you make that metaphorical climb out of the gutter. This task is my attempt to ‘live with the leper colonies’ you might say.

I have been handed criticism over my quest. A few of your compatriots feel this internet site is only for lowbrow humor and I am not welcome here. I could reduce my vernacular to your level in the same manner an adult addresses an infant. However, I do not see that this would be of benefit to any of the participants here. I am assisting the intellectually unwashed masses that reside here and I cannot perform my work by dropping my acumen to your collective level.

To return to my original topic, who would like to continue the discussion?

Enjoy the day.

RE: Stochastic Sampling?

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Coming around to the topic boards this morning brings me to see that again this is proven most true, as someone has most certainly decided to imitate me.

Most would be angry or reply with vehemnce at such usage of their name, as names identify who we are They might be angry and reply how they didn't pen such. Though I didn't write these two posts it does say one thing. Someone out thereis thinking about me to the point of wanting to imitate me. No matter how positive or negative the post, someone wants to imitate me.

Simply put, I've had an affect on someone, touched if you will, their existence to the point that they wish to gain my approval by imitation. As I siad, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and I am flattered that you decided to imitate me. Its a real ego boost to know that I preoccupied your thoughts to the point you had to try and be me. Thanks for the compliment.

Enjoy the day.

RE: Stochastic Sampling?

Oh who am I kidding. None of you baffoons could come close to imitating me. I wrote the previous posts and I doubt most of you could understand a word of it.

Enjoy the day.

What? My purse is not in style?

How am I supposed to enjoy the day, knowing that people are probably laughing at me behind my back about my purse?

OMG! I'm off to the bathroom to fix my mascara, because I am sure that all this crying has ruined my make-up!

Covenant, I'm more interested in understanding quantam mechanics and how it conflicts with cause and effect then reading your dull essays on computer graphics.

RE: Stochastic Sampling?

I thought you hit the Nyquist limit when your sampling frequency was insuffienctly largely, i.e. less than twice the frequency of the signal you are trying to sample. This is when aliasing occurs. Simply changing your sampling method may enable you some gains in this area, but it seems to me that it is more beneficial to develop alternate means of increasing the sampling frequency to aviod aliasing.
