spine cor bracing

hoping to spread the word and hear from others who are or are thinking about Spine Cor bracing. My daughter has been in the spine cor brace now for nearly a year and continues to hold at 41 and 40. If you read my original notes you will know she started with a double s at 54 and 54. She is strong, athletic and outgoing... she wears the brace nearly 23/7 off for showering and washing it... my only negative is that the company could give at least 2 sets of straps and all.. it gets pretty ratty after a year and i will be addressing the fit 2ndary to her growing , specifically , bust and wondering if the straps need to be refitted for optimal control of the s curve.

Spine cor in-brace measurements

Hello Caligirl and Fabforkids,

I am not making any attempt to discredit spine cor or your treatment choices thus far, however the measurement error on Cobb's angle is 5 to 9.6 degrees (which both of the in-brace correction measurements you mentioned are still within) and most bacing methods (I don't know about spine cor) require a 50% reduction of the cobbs able to be considered viable for success. Dr. Brian Oullette has studied with Dr. Dennis Woggon of the CLEAR Institute and is currently using a combined approach to treat many of his large (above 35 degrees) curve cases. Just trying to get eveyone working together for the betterment of the kids.

Spinecor

My 11 year old was also fitted with Spinecor on 4/15/08. T-30 L-36, we saw a 6 degree reduction with the brace in L when fitted. Not expecting anything other than to stop progression since she is a 0 on the Risser scale (very tall for her age already.) Very excited to be able to get this kind of treatment for her. Hope your child has great success!!

spine cor

I have been to Dr. Kerry Escamilla in Fort Lee ,he has been trained by Dr. Brian Oullette and Dr. Tom Pappas. The brace was put on my daughter on 4/10/08 and she immediatly had 8 degress lower. This was great news to us. She is wearing her brace for over 22 hours per day and doing the exercises well. I hope to hold her curve or decrease it. will be back to Dr. in 6 weeks... didnt cost half of what you stated and my insurance will cover some of that. At this writing I am very happy with Spine Cor and for parents wondering we started with 52 degree Double S curve...Peace and Health to all..

Spine cor and large curves

Hello Fabfourkids,

I have colleagues who use the spine core brace extensively and they will openly tell you that any patient with curves over 35 degrees are not a good canidate for spine cor bracing. It will cost you about $10k out-of-pocket and your son or daughter will most likely only continue to get worse. On the flip side, I commend you for holding off the orthopedic surgeons this long...I'm sure they are putting a lot of pressure on you to let them perform the surgery on your son or daughter. The only indication for perfoming the surgery on the level of Cobb's angles your dealing with is for cosmetic improvement only; don't let them scare you into believing anything different.

Fortunately there are 2 docs I know personally in the Fort Lee, NJ (I am assuming that is where your talking about) who should be able to handle your case. It is definately worth your time to contact them and get their opinion. It will definately be worth an hour of your time to meet with one of them.

Best in health,

Spine Cor research (not promising)

Hi Jim,

Here is a article done by Dr. Weiss of the Katharina-Schroth clinic in Germany. I understand that he is partial to the Cheneau brace (which he developed), but it is also peer reviewed and published in a respected journal. Let's keep in mind that peer reviewed means that the study design and data collection techniques passed the review board, not necessarily the conclusions drawn by the authors.

The over all approach used by Spine cor and the Cheneau brace seem to be a step in the right direction in the sense that they are attempting to incorporate functional rehabiliation with the brace, but in the end, I doubt any brace can be successful in permanently altering the natural history of progression in scoliosis unless it includes de-rotation of the hips and correction/improvement of the normal sagittal spine curvatures. Scoliosis treatment needs to include 3 dimensional correction and a system of traction/derotation to over come the crankshaft phenomenon, otherwise I believe the scoliosis cases over 30 degree cobb's angle will most likely continue to coil down regardless of the treatment method utilized.

Your critisim of CLEAR Institute's lack of peer reviewed research is valid and we are working hard to provide randomized, double blinded, and controlled studies in the future at the STAR clinic the CLEAR Institute recently opened up in Dallas, TX.

I can assure you that none of the docs working with in the CLEAR Institute are doing it for the money. It is a lot easier and more profitable to treat headaches and lower back pain than to spend everyday fighting an "incurable" spinal disease.

Ultimately, we need to all work together for the best of the patient.

Does SpineCor Bracing Work?

Brace treatment during pubertal growth spurt in girls with idiopathic scoliosis (IS): A prospective trial comparing two different concepts Pediatr Rehabil 2005 Jul-Sep;8(3):199-206 (ISSN: 363-8491) Weiss HR; Weiss GM Study design: Prospective comparison of the survival rates of two different bracing concepts with respect to curve progression and duration of treatment during pubertal growth spurt in two cohorts of patients followed up prospectively.

Objectives: To determine whether the results obtained by the use of a soft brace (SpineCor) is comparable to the results of the Cheneau derived TLSO during pubertal growth spurt. Background data: In recent peer reviewed literature, the SpineCor is described as an effective method of treatment for patients with scoliosis. However, until now, no controlled study has been presented comparing the results obtained with this soft brace to a sample treated with other bracing concepts proven effective.
Methods: Twelve patients with Cobb angles between 16-32 degrees during pubertal growth spurt are presented as a case series treated with the SpineCor. The survival rate of this sample is described and compared to a matched group of patients treated with the Cheneau brace of the same age group. All girls treated in both studies were pre-menarchial with the first clinical signs of maturation (Tanner 1-3).
Results: During the pubertal growth spurt, most of the
patients (11/12) with SpineCor progressed clinicly and radiologicly as well (at least 5 degrees ).
Progression could be stopped changing SpineCor to the Cheneau brace in most of the samples described (7/10).
The average Cobb angle at the start of treatment with the SpineCor was 21.3 degrees , after an avarage observation time of 21.5 months, 31 degrees .

The control sample, primarily treated with the Cheneau brace (n?=?15), showed at average no progression. Cobb angle at the start of treatment was 33.7 degrees and after the observation time of 37 months, 33.9 degrees.

Radiological improvements can be reported for some of the cases (3/15) as well as progressions (3/15). At 24 months of treatment time, 73% of the patients with a Cheneau brace and 33% of the patients with the SpineCor where still under treatment with their original bracing concept, at 42 month follow-up time 80% of the patients with Cheneau braces and 8% of the patients with the SpineCor survived with respect to curvature progression. The differences of the proportions statistically were highly significant.

Conclusions: The SpineCor does not change natural history of idiopathic scoliosis during the pubertal growth spurt.

The use of the Cheneau brace seems to do so. Oncoming studies with the aim to test the efficiency of braces should be based on samples at immediate risk for progression (only girls with first signs of maturation but pre-menarchial).

Can't believe I'm seeing this here?

First off, this is not a scientific poll. Some people could vote twice or more. Or the population of people participating in the poll may not reflect the true proportion of the population at large.

Second, I can't believe these doctors trying to discredit a orthopedic device to promote their practice or technique.

Clearn Institute does not have any peer reviewed long term studies to back up their claim. Yet these guys are here to bag on a device which has extensive long term study published on peer reviewed journal.

Spinecor is actually changing the way the scoliosis is being managed as we speak.

The studies on TLSO(Milwaukee, Boston, Providence) were such a let down that orthopods stopped precribing braces and some of them even went on to recommend stopping scoliosis screening due to lack of effective nonsurgical early intervention.

Last June, a new analysis of Spinecor was introduced on Journal of Pediatric Orhtopedic with criteria set by Scoliosis Research Society and the results were phenomenal. The success rate was 95.7% in preventing surgery.

It was such a promising finding that editors of the journal commended with opinion article citing that all orthos should cease the movement of calling for stopping scoliosis screening now that we finally have an effective device.

Now, going back to these chiropractors on this board, here it is, an effective device which has helping thousands of kids, and will help millions to come in the future and they are attacking this brace to what? to promote their own gain??

One of you said you did research on this brace and studies seem to be not too promising?? exactly what study are you mentioning? There has been 2 peer reviewed publications so far...2003 European Spine Journal and 2007 Journal of Pediatric Orthopedic...and in both cases, the numbers were phenominally successful..

So what studies are you actually referring to??

You know...promoting your own treatment method is one thing...what you guys are doing with Spinecor is disgraceful and very unprofessional. Why don't you go see patients rather than spend your time on the board trying to get free advertising by lying about certain information...

SpineCor Brace

I was fitted with the SpineCor brace in Arizona at the end of September. At first the brace seemed to feel great, but now I'm having problems with pain while wearing it. I went to a spine specialist M.D. last week and was told that I have kyphoscoliosis so now I'm wondering if I was fitted correctly with the SpineCor brace since I don't think the kypho aspect of my spine was taken into consideration. I saw Catalina Godwin's posting and was wondering if she did end up taking her daughter down to Arizona to get fitted as well. If so, how was her experience with the doctors and how is her daughter doing with the brace?

Spinecor

I have never seen any peer review research to support Dr. Hersh's claims regarding the Clear Institute. It sounds like Dr. Hersh is bad mouthing Spinecor for his own personal gain. Spinecor has research published in well respected peer review journals and Dr. Rivard has presented his research at the highly respected Scoliois Research Society conventions.
