Ron Paul

OK, so he's really a libertarian; but at least you don't have to worry about someone being Democrat-lite.

Bill Clinton

But then we'd just get into a situation in which his successor would be forced into a deficit, radical left-wingers like Ruth Bader Ginsberg would be put on the Supreme Court, our military and intelligence capabilities and our ability to protect ourselves against terrorism would crumble, our foreign policy would be in thrall to those who hate us, we would become a helpless satellite of the European Union, we would cut and run in any military action we were forced into, and Hillary would get a third term.

She's after one anyway, but unlike her husband, she *can't* win an election.

About the only upside to Clinton I can see is that if we should accidentally exercise our national sovereignty and get in a war without the UN's permission, nobody would say anything. You know. Like Kosovo.

The obvious choice.

The Republicans should nominate somebody who
- can control the deficit
- will protect the US from terrorism
- can win a national election.

The obvious choice is Bill Clinton. True, he's term-limited out. But that can be fixed with a constitutional amendment, just like for the charismatic Austrian, Ah-nuld.

A note from der Blogmeister

I should mention that in the first, aborted version of this poll, the following votes were cast:

George Allen (2)
Jeb Bush (2)
Dick Cheney (1)
Steve Forbes (1)
Bill Frist (1)
Rudy Giuliani (1)
John McCain (1)
Bill Owens (1) 0%
Condi Rice (3) 17%
Tom Tancredo (3)

Again, the inadvertent omission of some obvious candidates and some technical problems forced the re-start. Regrettably, many who voted the first time have (obviously) not returned.

Steve Forbes

The more I listen to Forbes, the more sense he makes. While his overhaul of the IRS and US Tax Code is his best known plank, he also shows a grasp of other domestic and international issues. I'm nowhere near being locked in, but right now, he has my strong attention.
