RE: Guess what?

Rescue - I think its similar to the pound... It's a Great Dane rescue, so they mostly have GDs and GD mixes.

RE: Guess what?

you're are an ass james. this is the exact scenario of why there are so many strays. you retards get pets and then when it's inconvenient to have them you dump them. or the people you dump them on dump them and you're still a #1 ass in that scenario too for thinking you've absolved yourself from the the responsibility. and I'm also guessing that if your cat needed medical attention your big paycheck could cover it, NOT!

RE: Guess what?

Before I left my ex-husband, it was so crazy...we paid $500 for a Yorkshire Terrier from a lady that raised Yorkies, Pappillons, and Maltese, and the very same day that we got the Yorkie, we fostered two different litters of puppies for the local humane society. They were so cute...one litter was a long-haired mix and the other litter was a boxer-mix, and were super cute. We had to name the puppies - humane society policy there - and so we named the boxer-mix puppies after famous boxers like Ali, Tyson, I don't remember the other two, and we named the other puppies after my brothers' kids because they were like cow dogs and my brothers kids have all done the FFA thing...lol

As far as the pound, humane society, and rescue question...from my limited knowledge...I would venture to say that a pound is run by your local city. They are kind of more like the "dog police" they give fines, pick up strays, pick up people's doggies that got out of the fence, etc...their policy is more of the nature that when they get an animal, if nobody adopts it, then it is killed in two or three weeks. Once again, were talking city funds...most humane societies are run by volunteers and count on donations from individuals. They are more likely to spay or neuter the animals and then charge a minimal charge for adopting the pet. Most humane societies have a no-kill policy, so sometimes they keep animals for a very long time, which can be very sad. I volunteered for the humane society for about a year, and hated seeing the same dogs over and over...what a way to live your life as a dog, in a big fenced-in area...

Rescues are pretty darn cool. They usually specialize in certain breeds. They will go out of their way to do things like fly animals all over the country to get them or adopt them out. They are usually started out of a passion for a certain breed. When I volunteered for the humane society, one of the other volunteers helped a rescue get a dog across the country by being part of a "leg." She had to go to Memphis and get a dog that she drove from Memphis to Texarkana, and then someone else took the dog on to Texas somewhere. They sometimes get puppies from puppy mills and spend fortunes sometimes on vet bills. They will also take in pets that people can no longer afford because of huge medical bills. Most of the funding for rescues comes from volunteers.

Once again, my knowledge could be flawed, but that is what I learned from my experience as a humane society volunteer.

Anyway, I thought it was crazy to be paying $500 for a dog on the same day that we took in seven abandoned little mix-breeds, but I would say my passion is Terriers, and my daughter had wanted a little dog of her own for many years, and that is what she wanted. My other daughter cried when "Ryan" one of the fostered puppies got adopted out...

RE: Guess what?

GUW - I think you summed it up pretty well. Oh, and I think that this dog may have come to the rescue through One of those people that drive them across country. From the sound of it, his original family did everything they could to keep him, but because of unforseen financial reasons, they lost their home and had to give him up for adoption because they were evicted and living in a tent at a campsite, and could no longer afford him. I would hate to give up my dog, but I guess when you've exhausted your resources, it's probably in the dog's best interest. Anyway, he came from MO all the way to CO, and him and my dog will meet tomorrow, and if they get along, we take him home with us! I love the whole rescue concept!

RE: Guess what?

I dated a guy that was very tall and thin and he had a Great Dane. I told him that they reminded me of Roger and the male dalmation in 101 Dalmations because they were both so skinny and tall. He loved his Great Dane and also got it from a rescue.

RE: Guess what?

well julie i'm glad you are able to step in. the family story with the tent and stuff, that's a whole other message board topic I reckon. How dramatic.

guw, that is pretty crazy. I wonder if the $500 dog thought he was gonna go away like all the little pups.
