Posted By: SFX - Posted On: Jan 1, 2006 Views: 7059	SFX- Please DONT erase the sfx!!! It's not going to be same without them! Mangakas have their own style and their sfx is part of them! So, don't erase them. Putting an English translation beneath it or on the side of the page would very nice. ^_^

Okay, here's a question that's probably been raised many times... but not by us, so we'll raise it now. ;) How do readers feel about editing SFX? I personally like the SFX left alone as that is the way the mangaka (manga artist) wanted it, that it's part of the mangaka's art and style. Bitter Sweet (admittedly not for ALL releases, just some) recently has started to edit out all the original Japanese SFX and replace them with the English equivalent. We were planning to do this for all future new projects. However after talking to a comic artist and industry professional about this, we're now undecided about the issue. Should we edit out the SFX or not? If we leave the SFX in (and have the translation for the SFX below), we can help preserve the mangaka's art and intention to some degree. SFX can be 'sounded' out with either Hiragana, Katakana, or a combination of the two. So how the mangaka sounds out the SFX is to convey a certain mood. As in the case when the SFX is sounded out with a combination of hiragana/katakana "it's because sometimes one or the other doesn't fit the mood as well. So, they break the rules of written language to create a specific aesthetic". (direct quote from the 'Industry Professional' who wishes to remain Anonyomous) Also, notice how BeBeautiful and other publishers of BL English manga don't edit out the SFX? No, it's not cause they're lazy...it's cause they were asked by the manga artist to preserve and leave the art intact. It sounds like you've already pretty much made up your mind already, why the poll then? Well... we'd like to stop editing out the SFX out of respect for the mangaka's work. That IS why we scanlate right? Because we love the stories/art and would like more people exposed to them. :D (Yes, that the real reason~ it's not cause editing out SFX and making it look nice after is a b*tch and we'd like to stop... that's just a bonus XD) But we still would like some feedback from the readers out there. Some might think that we're being lazy for not editing the SFX or that it's no longer a High Quality release if the SFX is left intact. ~.~ We'd like to assure you that this is not the case. It's not a matter of being lazy... we'd put the same amount of hours into editing regardless, what does change is how much we get done. Editing the SFX can easily double the editing time for a chapter. So instead of an editor editing 2 chapters, an editor can only edit one if editing the SFX also. I myself have spent up to 3 hours working on editing the SFX for just one page. One page... in 3 hours I can normally typeset half to a third of another chapter. XD And what makes a release High Quality is not whether the SFX has been edited... it's in the quality of the scans, whether the chapter has been leveled and cleaned of dust and dirt specks properly, whether the translation makes sense and the amount of typos/grammatical errors are kept to a minimum and in whether the typesetting/lettering for each bubble is even and pleasing to the eye. Those factors are what make for a HQ release. ;) Anyway. vote and let us know what you think. XD We do care what you think... we might not change our stand, but we'll listen to what you have to say. ;)
