| Posted By: Erik Posted On: Mar 5, 2007 Views: 87 | Homeland Give-a-ways It is not costing the tax payer a thing for these items. So who the heck cares. Of course money could be spent elsewhere, that is the case with everything and anything. I think that at times Channel 2 reporters are bored and think of ways to be annoying. How come I have to hear that story when there are more important things in the world that should be covered. I believe that the DARE program has give a ways like that... what is the point of the DARE program... hmmm... to keep people off drugs?!? Maybe we should keep all of these numbers a secret and when people need them, make them obscure to find. I think everyone, including the federal government has the right and the obligation to market their agency. It is vitally important to the safety and well being. And if they are using the drug money to pay for it, well then that is the ultimate irony and turning something bad into something good. Maybe instead of complaining about it, Channel 2 should be supporting that... aren't they part of the Kids Escaping Drugs program... funny that those numbers on those items may help people do that. |
| Posted By: M.T., Amherst Posted On: Mar 1, 2007 Views: 109 | homeland security money channel 2 i'm shocked the government is using drug money for this stuff. Not! It's no shock to me. I have friends and a family member who work in similar lines of work and this is nothing. there's money being spent on so many things like this that should probably be helping other things. and be easy on channel 2. watch the video, they told both sides. i think ice does great thingslike those CLEARLY oulined in the story, but could that cash be better spent somewhere else, probably. at least we have a tv news station in wny that is willing to give us the chance to look at these things and decide for ourselves what we think. p.s. i love the forums. do them on more stories. |
| Posted By: Greg In Cheektowaga Posted On: Mar 1, 2007 Views: 109 | Homeland Security I'm suprised by some of the reaction here. I think that money for this could go to something much more worthwhile. If a number needs to get out, fine, but does it really have to be on a teddy bear, etc, etc, etc????? I don't know about all of you, but if I needed to call someone about my kid being molested or drug smugglers, the last place I would rush to is my kids toy box for a teddy bear or yo-yo. Nice work channel 2. |
| Posted By: Robert Posted On: Mar 1, 2007 Views: 109 | Homeland Security Giveaways You have great reporters, such as Rich Kellman, but whoever is in your "news management" has to go. This homeland security story is ONE example of how bad someone's judgement is there decideing to waste viewers time on a story like this. Let's get back to having good reporters "reporting the NEWS" not petty nonsense just to bash agencies that are trying to protect us. I would like to send a thank you out to all levels of law enforcement in our area (AND our troops overseas) for providing for our safety as we live in this great community. Channel 2 start working with the community not against it. |
| Posted By: Fred Angola Posted On: Mar 1, 2007 Views: 134 | Homeland Security Giveaways Talk about a non-issue and nit-picking, this takes the cake. Is this investigative reporting ? Maybe for the East Overshoe Chronicle. This wasnt even taxpayer money! Boose should explore other career paths. |
| Posted By: James Posted On: Mar 1, 2007 Views: 135 | "cheap-shot" at DHS Offical Wow, was that one sided reporting. I think the Homeland Security Official said that we the tax payers are not paying for the items, the drug dealers-bad guys are! Homeland Security is taking a very small percentage of seized drug money and using it to make the public aware and giving the public a place they can call to report crimes. I would like to see DHS talking to all of our schools and hand out as much as they can. Hey, the reporter took home key chains, H20 bottles, a yo-yo, etc for his kids or family right? He must not have thought DHS was too out of line? |
| Posted By: Carl Posted On: Mar 1, 2007 Views: 136 | Homeland Security I agree with the consensus. This topic is a major waste of time, particularly the time of those Homeland Security personnel who have to reply. WGRZ may have cost us more than the $1,500 spent on the gadgets. Let's put more emphasis on good news stories, of which there is a plethora in reality, but a dearth in the news. |
| Posted By: Dave Gibson Posted On: Feb 28, 2007 Views: 137 | HS Advertising You have to be kidding me that this was a feature story with all the other great stuff going in Western New York this has be shown all day. The program is being paid for out of money from drug dealers and other individuals working outside the laws of our country. If this program prevents one plane from being blown up or results in one sexual predator being jailed it is well worth the money. I am sure if an act of terrorism killed or injured a loved one of the people complaining they would be yelling bloody murder about how it was the governments fault for not protecting us. You can not have it both ways. We are not experts and surely the main stream media and the politicians are not either. LetÂ’s leave things like this to the professionals. If you need a soap box to stand on, find something worth while like the rural poverty in Olean, building more youth centers to keep kids off the street, or supporting the many charitable endeavors around Western New York like Friends Of The Night People. Have a nice night. Remember you can because of programs like this one. God Bless The USA and Support our troops weather you support president Bush or not. By the way, what price do you put on the lives of your loved ones? |
| Posted By: Anthony Posted On: Feb 28, 2007 Views: 138 | Homeland Security This story could have had such a postive impact on our community and our children, instead the reporter with an agenda attempted to discredit an agency whose job it is to protect us. Unbelievable, Senetor Schumer followed suit in the same story. How would Sen Schumer know if the citizens of this country would or would not call the DHS hotline. Does Sen Schumer not want the public to have an agency that they can contact if they have information to report such as a possible terrorist. I believe Sen Schumer is making a push to have the Peace Bridg moved to the Canadian side, whereas Canadian law would dictate. Did Sen Schumer hear that Canada's equivalent to the U.S. Patriot Act just got voted down. I wonder if Sen Schumer and the reported really understand law enforcement and the idea of public relations? |
| Posted By: Don Posted On: Feb 28, 2007 Views: 145 | Homeland Security $$$ I have been a long time viewer of Channel 2 news but the way that Channel 2 is "reporting" is getting ridiculous. Just because it is a government agency, Channel 2 is trying to create news rather than reporting it. For one the US Budget is Trillions of dollars per year, if the Homeland Security Department decides to market an anti-terrorism phone number for $150,000 I am really not that concerned, there have been toilet seats that cost the feds that much. Channel 2, please start REPORTING the news and work with the community to start showing the good things happening in western NY rather than this petty nonsense and you might not lose another viewer. Bring back the professional station you were. |
| Posted By: Dan Posted On: Feb 28, 2007 Views: 146 | What a Joke This is a great example of a would be reporter trying desperately to become the story. What great investigative journalism! Has this kid never heard of marketing? How much money has been spent promoting 911 AND THAT WAS ONLY 3 Numbers!!!! These guys are doing a job to promote an agency that is doing tough work. To criticize them for marketing shows a reporter with no grasp of the issues, and a News Director without any reporters handing him or her stories worth airing. By the way, topping it all off with Chuck Schumer was the sine qua non for a "story" like this! Once the camera light came on I bet he was able to muster up that look of"outrage" in seconds. Ask what he thinks about spending money on building a fence on the Mexican border, or about requiring passports. Please! |
| Posted By: Larry Posted On: Feb 28, 2007 Views: 144 | Homeland Security Giveaways Unfair....very unfair, to besmirch the (successful) methods that DHS agents use to educate the public. There was a law enforcement job fair at Medaille College today - and the law enforcement agencies used the same "tools" to get the work out. It's called "Public Service", and it's coming from criminals' pockets, not taxpayers.I agree some of the items are a bit much, but most will not be discarded, as a "business" card would. I fully support ICE Agent Peter Smith and his agents. I personally know many of them, and the public would be very proud of these men and women if they knew how genuinely dedicated and professional they are. |
| Posted By: Jeff from Amherst Posted On: Feb 28, 2007 Views: 143 | Are you for real? I can't believe channel 2 actually ran this on the air. How silly! How many people know how to reach this department of government. To be honest.. I forgot the departments name but if I had a magnet at my desk with the phone number I might remember it. I find it interesting that a station "on our side" would actually want to eliminate public awareness about a government agency here to protect us. I also think it is funny that you would complain that the money being used to purchase these items is coming from drug busts. I guess it would be more entertaining and better for Channel 2 News if it came from tax dollars? Or is it channel 2 doesn't have the budget to get these items for self promotion? After all.. isn't that why you have a promotions department? |
| Posted By: Brian Posted On: Feb 28, 2007 Views: 142 | Criticism of ICE Outreach Program You really need to reprimand the reporter and editor who produced the article on yesterday's news regarding the ICE Outreach program. The reporter insinuated that the items given out (trinkets with the ICE logo and a contact phone number) were a waste of taxpayers' money, and implied that the Agent interviewed for the story was either insincere or stupid when he stated that such handouts are an effective way of informing the public about how to contact the agency with an investigative lead. The handouts are a form of advertising, and if the reporter doesn't believe that advertising is effective, maybe he should do a report on how much money is wasted by local businesses who pay to air commercials on your program. No, I don't really expect to see that "investigative report" anytime soon. Oh, and for Senator Schumer to criticize the outreach program is the height of hypocricy. How much does he spend (of the taxpayers money) on writing, producing and mailing glossy reports to his constituents, informing us of what a wonderful job he is doing for us? I don't have a problem with the job he has done as a Senator, but I have a big problem with his criticizing an honest effort by local ICE agents to inform the public (at a cost of only $1500) about their agency, when he employs an entire staff to do the same for him personally, and he doesn't think twice about the cost. |
| Posted By: Carl Stone Posted On: Feb 28, 2007 Views: 133 | Boose Loose I agree with the concensus... this is a non-issue and a very lame story. Let's find something that is of real consequence. Or, better yet, let's break new ground with a positive, inspiring story... something that makes us feel good. |
