24/00 and 12 top/bottom

As a long time military member, I personally prefer 00 versus 24, and I like it to be at the top.

Though, to be mathematically correct, there is no true "zero" in any number system, whether it be binary, octal, decimal, or whatever. The "zero" in arabic style number systems, is merely a place-holder used to simplify finding solutions, and to allow for a visual representation of any number.

Also, since time is a linear concept and fails measurement in much the same way that space does, there is no _acutal_ 24:00. Look up "zeno's paradoxes". And also consider that the number "0.999..9"(repeating 9's) is equal to the number "1" ie:
1=9/9=9*1/9=9*0.111..1=0.999..9

Perhaps the only true watch/clock would be one with spinning hands, but no numbers or markings at all- which would be pretty useless.

24 or 00

I agree that 00 is much more logical than 24. I was surpried to see the AAA website claim that the day runs from 00:01 to 24:00 rather than 00:00 to 23:59. I believe that all LED/LCD style digital clocks display in this way too.

An oddity is that some clocks/watches also display 60 on the seconds measurement instead of 0. This is true of some of the clocks with mechanically rotating wheels with the numbers on - I believe the Tymeter Numechrons have 00 on the hours wheel, but 60 on the seconds.

There seems to be a minority of 0 at the top watches compared to 24, but I haven't yet found one with 0 at the bottom instead of 24.

My current everyday watch is a very inexpensive Le Chat with 24 (and 60) at the top, but it is great in other ways.

24 on top

I like 24 on top. By analogy with a common 12 hour dial, let the counting begin at the top. In response to the guy who would rather have a double zero after 23:59:59, I am more familiar and comfortable with the 24. Again by analogy with the common 12 hour dial, after 11:59:59 PM, we have 12:00:00 and the twelve somethings continue up until 1:00:00

00:00 vs. 24:00

I was employed for many years in the time equipment business,
during which time I worked for both Simplex and Stromberg. At NO
time in all those years did I ever see or hear of a time recorder
that printed 24 at the end of the 23rd hour of the day. Likewise,
I never saw any wall clock we made for SAC and other military
agencies that read 24 at the top. The wall clocks always read
zero at the top, not 24. I firmly believe that when the day ends
at 23:59:59 that the new day rolls in at 00:00:00 and then counts
UP from there. After years of being around clocks and watches,
selling them, fixing them, using them, etc. the idea that the 24th
hour exists somehow/somewhere seems totally ridiculous to me.
If it did exist, we would be showing the time as 24:01, 24:02, etc.
until 1:00 a.m. arrived which to me makes absolutely no sense.
Others may see this differently, and they certainly have a right
to their opinions, but when you come right down to it the 00-23
hours construct seems to my mind to be the only logical one to
use.

12 on top

First I find it interesting that some people believe that there is hour 00:00:00, there isn't such a thing, a solar day has 86,400 seconds, which is 24 hours exactly. so it is correct to have a 24 hour marker to signal the end of the day. On a 24 hour watch, my preference is for the 12 on top. There are two main reasons for this choice, (I have a Glycine Vintage V), first I look at my watch during the day, so I like noon to be on top, when I'm asleep the hour marker is on the bottom, this is more natural for non military appliocations, like everyday life. The second reason is because the hour marker becomes a 2 dimensional representation of the sun's apparent movement around the earth, in relation to my longitud.

24 on top has one simple application, to make it obvious when we transition from one day to the next.

24 Hr watches can be used as a Compass

Because of the 24-hour dials, watches can also be used as a Compass; point the hour hand in the direction of the sun and find North at 24:00

What to put on top 0, 12, 24

I love 24H watches, but I believe that 0 should be on top rather than 24. A watch is used to read time and time never reaches 24:00:00! only 23:59:59. The day spans from 00:00:00 to 23:59:59

On top and not bottom, because we are used to chronos and 12H clocks to begin counting always on top, why change now.

To consider the hour pointer as the sun, again the 0 should be on top, because compasses point North, and at noon, the sun is at your back in the South.

Why not buy a watch you can wear
upside down, with the numerals
facing outward? Problem could be
the date or any chrono function.

All in all: a very good topic of
discussion for this site.

Very best,
Thomas

24

Even though my watches are 24 on top I would like to try 12 on top on my next 24h because I believe it may present a refreshingly different view which may cause me to gaze even longer at my watch when I want to know the time.
