| Posted By: Jason Posted On: Nov 11, 2003 Views: 2150 | euro It is absolutely ridiculous to say that a union of democratic countries needs a single currency. The countries in NAFTA are doing perfectly well without a common currency and they are not even discussing the possibility of having one. The euro is not working and it couldn't work. To set a common interest rate for 12 different countries in the eurozone is ludicrous. Every country has its own economic needs. Britain has nothing to gain from the euro, but it could lose it's political sovereignty and booming economy(the UK is doing better, economically, than Germany and France), not to mention the low payroll and income taxes, as Paul Craig Roberts said in "Capitalism." I don't think enough Britons realise the serious consequences of joining the euro. |
| Posted By: Andrew Smith Posted On: Jan 14, 2002 Views: 2169 | Euro The Euro could only make sense if the area which it covers were an optimal currency area. The existing Euroland area is not such an optimal area. As some other comments have suggested, Benelux plus Germany and Austria might be optimal and France could squeeze herself into it with some long term discomfort. It is inconceivable that the med countries could ever be so attuned to Rhine capitalism to fit well in the Euro. The most extreme non-fitting countries are UK and Eire. Our financial structure, economic focus and common law background make UK and Eire the worst possible candidates for the Euro. I don't want it here and I worry about the impact on our neighbour in the Republic. |
| Posted By: R N Oakley Posted On: Jan 13, 2002 Views: 2172 | Euro It makes sense if you have a weak economy, but the UK is strong and thefore it is a bad idea for us. |
| Posted By: Graham Booth Posted On: Jan 13, 2002 Views: 2166 | Euro We must NEVER join the euro, since it means handing over control of our economy, interest rates and most of our gold/foreign reserves to unelecetd foreign bureaucrats. |
| Posted By: Richard North Posted On: Jan 13, 2002 Views: 2154 | Euro I agree that the question is badly drafted and ambiguous. Certainly, a single currency "makes sense" for, say, Benelux and perhaps the original EEC six. But the real question is whether the euroe "makes sense" for the UK. Here, my answer is emphatically NO. |

| Posted By: Posted On: Jan 3, 2001 Views: 2143 | god help us if we do get a common currency we are controlled enough by Europe we are British |
| Posted By: Posted On: Oct 16, 2000 Views: 2139 | one market eliminates currency exchange problems and therefore speeds up economy.on top of that ,money unfortunatly is a powerful symbol and signifies in my opinion a stronger unified europe |
| Posted By: Posted On: Oct 16, 2000 Views: 2129 | A single currency in Europe is the stepping stone to a one world government & one world currency, |
| Posted By: Posted On: Aug 27, 2000 Views: 2124 | I don't believe that any country should give up its currency because that is a symbol of its strength. |
| Posted By: Posted On: Jul 4, 2000 Views: 2120 | The ability of the people to hold to account those who make the laws that affect them makes sense. Therefore the single currency does not. |
| Posted By: Posted On: Jul 3, 2000 Views: 2116 | Question badly defined. One can interpret "make sense" in any number of ways. RM |
