| Posted By: Rodger in Edmonton Posted On: Feb 24, 2008 Views: 1682 | Follow Up - Truly Divine poetry The beauty, glory and omnispresence of god is revealed best in this poetry. For these poets all that we see, experience and feel are manifestations of god's hand at work : the universe, the dance of the heavens, a beautiful woman, the human condition, human love are all derived from the ocean of the divine. Simply put - the most beautiful poetry I have ever read by far. I now have many of these works including: The Divan of Babi Tahir, The Divan of Hafez, Jami, Rumi Saadi and more. If I had to have 1 on a desert island, outside of the Holy Koran of course, it would be The Divan of Hafez. It is cost is 90 US ; its contents priceless. |
| Posted By: Rodger in Canada Posted On: Jul 1, 2007 Views: 1855 | Persian Poets - The Best Ever ?? It is Canada day and I am reading the new Shahnameh translation by Dick Davis , intro by Azar Nafisi. To any well read man or women who are serious thinkers this work and others must rank among human kind's greatest literary achievements - period. The Greek Lyric poets from Pindar to Critias are great in their own way as are Ovids Art of Love, Heroides and Amores but the Persian style, form çomes alive and jumps off the page at you. The Greek works ( Loeb Classical Library Series) read and feels like a window to the soul a la Republic of Plato and his long shadow .The Persian poets seems to be able to carry the reader inside the soul (To use a rough analogy English novelists vs Dostoyevsky for those who have not read Greek Lyrical poetry or Ovid .)I have the Divan of Hafez on the way and look forward to opening it up and dropping my finger. Maybe I will be wiser by the end of the day - I hope so.Equal to Plato's dialogues, these works are rife with wisdom for the ages - for the human condition is eternal and unchanging. If you love great widom, great literature and have ever asked yourself : How should I live my life ? What is a good man?..a good woman? .. a good father, mother ? If you ask these these questions you will love these great works that show an unparalled mastery of poetry in all it's greatness. I now know why the Iranian have beautiful tombs and heritage sites dedicated to their beloved poets. They are truly beautiful masterpieces worthy of such praise. |
