Muai Thai today

I started Thai boxing a few years ago just to get fit. After a short while I starterd to really get into the martial art side of it and it is that which keeps me interested in Muai Thai rather than the fittness aspect.

Muai Thai alas is becoming more and more a sport and the martial arts origins are slowly being forgotten. It is a rarity to see a well exectued Wai Khru at a show. Also, with the differing rules, it is possible to actually lose a fight by performing a true muai thai manouvre such as a knee to the head!

I have trained at a few different gyms and K.O. was the only place that I was taught the meaning of Muai Thai and the magic and mystery of the art.

I don't mean that Muai Thai shouldn't be seen as a way to get fit, but I would like to see more people learning the origins. If they chose to train Muai Thai, then people should know where the origins lie.

Way Its Done

I think the development of thai boxing can be respected but at the moment not really. The traditioan can be respected if it is tought in the traditional way.

Yes it does!

The advancement of Muay Thai in no way takes away from the heritage of the sport. If these advancments were made 1,500 years ago it would have been called progression! People find it hard to believe that modern practitioners have the experience and knowledge to further the art, this couldn't be further than the truth. There are people out there (like our good friend Bill) who are just as devoted to Muay Thai as the original practitioners and students, and these people should be given the chance to shine!!

Respecting Muay Thia

Being a Relatively new student of Thia Boxing, i can not pretend to know a great deal about the history and techniques Practiced by Muay Thia Traditionalists. But having lived for a just under a year in bangkok and having trained for a short time in a Thia gym there , i can say that the spirit of training hard, love of the Art, basic thia Boxing techniques, respect for your training partner ,teacher other students etc is certainly apparent in the classes i attend at the KO gym. I do not think we such be afraid to abapt and change Mauy Thia to fit in with our culture and ideas if we are fornuate maybe we can bring something new and valuable to the Art.

Respect for traditions

generally - I would have to say no. Obviously it depends on where you train and what your Kru teaches you. I have visited many gyms which do not teach Ram Muay's to their pupils (meant to be specific to each gym or Kru), do not teach the history of Muay Thai, and do not even Wai the Kru.

The popularity of kickboxing has lead to the lack of respect for the Muay Thai traditions. I think many kickboxers who want to do full contact, then start training in Muay Thai to get use of the elbows and high kicks etc. They (tend to) have no respect for the tradition and are just interested in kicking the ****e out of their opponent.

Having said that, I think the ppl that are taught and are respectful of the traditions are doing a great job. Keep Muay Thai as a friendly, amicable sport with respect for your Kru, your opponent and the fight itself.

respect of muay thai tradition

yes it does bcos muay thai has been there for kings amusement for years and just bcos the western world have started to use its forms as a sport does not mean that its not respected. as a matter in fact the traditions are so well respected that even the western world have addopted there traditions and some even believe in the thai traditions. for example we have started to do the ram muay and most fighters are even buying themselfs the head bands.

respect of a martial arts

the martial arts can not be on the same line as sport but as i do not class thai as a martial arts i could say that its a sport.i think this for th ewestern world but in the east i do think its an martial ares because in the west we intend to use thai boxing for only brutal entartainment. in the east however th etraditions and rituals are respected and gives you the idea that your watching a holy entairtainment .

It seems to me that some of the traditions associated with Muay Thai, for example the ritual dance, are negelcted in favour of making Muay Thai just another spectator sport.
