While there's no disputing Graf was a great player I think her dominance in the 90s needs to be set in the context of the very limited competition she faced. Not for nothing was the mid 90s women's tour known as Steffi and the Seven Dwarves. The Evert-Navratilova rivalry prevented either woman from buidling as impressive a record as Graf, in the same way that the King-Court rivalry did. Had Evert or Navratilova retired in 1980 say then the other would have amassed a grand slam total nearer to Graf's. The tragic stabbing of Monica Seles leaves a very large question mark over Graf's achievements. And the 9-9 Graf Navratilova head to head is very revealing. Navratilova was clearly past her peak by 1988 while Graf was at hers yet they remain tied on their head to head. Its all conjecture but I doubt Graf would have won a set from the Martina of 1983, who only lost a single match the entire year. |

Graf through so much adversity, family problems,& physical problems, "the incident, with monica, people need to remember how much it affected steffi too. Almost to the point of her quitting. I read alot about how seles had graf's number. French Open 92 seles wins 10-8 final set. Wimbledon 92 Graf reaches perfection to win against Seles for the loss of a few games. No one has ever matched that level of tennis, except both seles & graf in the Us Open final, when Seles returned. Arguably the best match in the history of women's tennis - won by Graf. Martina Nav. with her amazing all round record. Best Ladies Singles Player Ever - Graf without a doubt!! Best Ladies Player Ever - Navratilova without a doubt!! |

Jackie Joyner and Babe transcended their sport and excelled in all areas of athletics in which they competed. Martina Navratilova is the greatest tennis player, male or female; Steffi is second, male or female. |

Let's give her props before I make a case that she may not be the best ever. - She was world No. 1 for a record time - She won the golden slam - She has won all 4 slams at least 4 times Here are some reasons why I consider her NOT the best - overly depended on her forehand. sometimes game was ugly with her trying to hit a ball using forehand (even if she could have attempted a backhand shot) - no significant competition in her time. There have not been many players in her time that can now be considered great or we say 'should have'. (Sabatini, Arantxa) - Monica Seles routinely had her number till the incident in '93. Steffi won 11 grandslams after that. I tend to discount some of those wins, had that ugly Seles incident not happened. - Martina played during a time (a long time) that included players now considered great/legends (including Steffi) - Martina had significant success in doubles as well - most annoying aspect during Steffi's career were reports that she was physically not well. Of course, nothing was wrong if she hoisted the trophy From my perspective, Martina Navratilova should be considered the geastest ever. Consider her status among her peers.Steffi was reclusive due to the nature of her entourage. Steffi won - a lot. Was she great - nah! Martina won great. Steffi should be given her due. She won whenever an opportunity presented itself (excuses aside). Steffi would not have lost that final to Conchita Martinez the way Martina did. Well, you are great for only some time. |
