Why campaign outside the USA?

For what purpose would a presidential candidate campaign outside the USA to people who can not vote for him? How many presidential candidates before they were elected in the USA, other than Obama, visited other countries before the election?

I suppose by doing so, the candidate makes a statement to the American Public that he is able to handle foreign policies. Being a young senator, Obama, must show strength in opinions of people outside the USA in order to convince the American Voters that he is the right person for the presidency.

Did any other presidential candidates use this strategy? If so, did it help them get elected? Did President Kennedy go outside the USA in his first campaign? I know some presidents who were running to be “re-elected” to office have visited other countries? Most Presidents after election have visited other countries; but my question is still just that; “for what purpose would a new presidential candidate campaign outside the USA before being elected?”

Do you know the answer?
