| Posted By: Jonathan Perry Posted On: Nov 7, 2008 Views: 333 | The Candidate -- One of the best ever For those who have not seen it, check out "The Candidate," an absolutely classic (not to mention highly entertaining) 1972 film with prime-time era Robert Redford in the lead role as a somewhat reluctant liberal senatorial candidate who gets swept up in the political machine and zeitgeist. Here's a movie where Redford's great looks, charm, and likeable screen presence are crucial to the film's message about the sale-ability and telegenic necessity of candidates, as well as a commentary about the ways in which belief systems are tested, compromised, shaped, challenged, and abandoned in pursuit of power and victory. technically not about a presidential run, but an essential work on the themes and elements that govern presidential politics that is still relevant today. Plus, Peter Boyle is in it -- always a plus -- and the excellent actor who plays the Republican incumbent is deliciously condescending to his young challenger. Seriously superb viewing. |

Probably the most realistic of all movies dealing with the nomination/election process. And frankly, I cannot understand why the movie Air Force One is so popular. What an unbelievable piece of crap - anyone who thinks you can hang suspended from a jet as in the film needs to go back to science class. Utterly ridiculous! |
