Institutional Accreditation Needed- URGENTLY!

A major challenge here, though, is the UCJ's policies pertaining to accrediting programmes. In the current dispensation, a programme has to run its full course (whether it's two years or four years) before it could be submitted for accreditation. In addition, the UCJ is now requiring institutions to seek its approval before introducing new programmes. I guess this is an attempt to control the problem that this poll highlights. However, I am calling for a new dispensation in which the UCJ would be required to accredit institutions rather than programmes. If the institution is accredited, then its programmes would be accredited automatically. This is the practice in the USA (to a large extent)and in two of the major Caribbean countries with recognized accrediting bodies- Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados. The UCJ needs to reform itself to reflect contemporary accrediting practices.

Degrees not accredited

Administrators and stakeholders in the educational system must work tirelessly to ensure that all degrees and diplomas are accredited. It is unfair for a student to study for anywhere between one to four years and to hear that at the end of their studies and graduation to learn that their degrees or diplomas are of no use. It is full that the Government of this country look into this practice and come to the rescue of the students. These institutions need to ensure that their programmes are accredited within a reasonable time. Student cant afford to spend so much money and time studying and to hear at the end that their degree or diploma is of no value.
