"Root" Or "Rowt"?

I always thought the pronunciation was regional, but apparently not.

I think I use "root" in about 95% of the situations that I am required to say the word out loud, but every now and then, I catch myself saying "rowt". Probably because I've heard other people say it that way, and it's stuck somewhere in the recesses of my brain like a bad penny. And I know at work I do intentionally say "rowt" when I am talking about forwarding written information to several individuals (as in, "rowt" this magazine to the members of the Operations Team.)

The song "Route 66" came to mind immediately for me too. Also the old 60's TV series. I think when you are talking about a roadway, it should be "root".

I went to a Sonic once that repeated it back to me "rowt" and I go you mean "root?" bwahahahaha!!
