bear cannisters

if DEC didn't remove so many lean-tos and restrict camping so much in the high peaks in the past 25 years maybe we wouldn't have this problem. this concentrated the bear problem even worse.
that being said i do agree to a point that cannisters could be a big help but not a total solution. $65 dollars each! talk about gouging. it would be nice to come with a solution for a cannister by making one from a metal container you could find around your house. i have an idea! do you?

cannisters

Stupid or careless people have caused the problem. I try to camp away from other people, such as lower summits, I have never had a problem. Simply avoid crowded areas. This is a true wilderness experiance.

canisters

Speaking of silly, all these previous comments are...

Requiring the canisters isn't about us - it is about the bears. Over the years, while we have encroached the bears territory for our recreation, they have become habituated to humans(humans who have been poor at hanging or otherwise protecting their food) and have become a "nusance". The bears who become too good at it, are then relocated or shot. By carrying a canister, you not only protect your food, but over time will reduce the bear/human interaction which protect the bears. Canisters are the only method proven safe and effective for this. The selfishness i have noted on this site is remarkable. This is the exact reason we need rules and regs and Summit Stewards. Obviously you had no idea where to walk up there, and the Steward was there to inform. A majority of wilderness backpackers are stupid and selfish. Get a bigger backpack Tardo. If you are backpacking overnight with all appropriate gear, you need a pack big enough to hold a canister anyway. Think outside yourself, and the need for canisters will make itself clear.
