| hudson - too expensive
I think you are a little unkind in your review here - sure, ok, it's not
straight reggae, but that's what makes it beautiful. This album follows
in three solid traditions: Jamaica's love of fusing reggae with
everything else and especially funk/disco, Britain's love of trying to
sell it, and Hudson's refusal to fit any kind of mold.
And while I wonder what Hudson would have to say about the work he did
here, it should be noted that the backing band is then-Rhodesia's Otis
Waygood, a blues-turned-progrock-turned-reggae band of jewish kids from
Bulawayo.
The standouts for me here are 'smoking' which I would call straight
reggae in the Keith Hudson style, and 'civilisation', along with its
accompanying instrumental - there are a lots of funky reggae tracks out
there, but this is one that I play for friends.
