Fool's Crow

I am said roommate mentioned in the first sentence in this review. You'll be hearing from my attorney's. They mere mention of my existence and any past association with Joel ,the reviewer, constitutes an invasion of my privacy and a slander to my character.

But, about the book. It's true that I found the book at a bus stop one rainy night in Portland Oregon circa 2002. It was 5:00am in the morning and the opiate monster inside me was demanding a fix as I was unsuccessful scoring the night before. So I was in a bad area looking to do bad things to myself ( some might argue good things ) when I found this book and the title intrigued me. Having grown up NY, KY , and TX I rarely came into contact with Native Americans, but since moving to the North West, NA's are a very big part of the culture here, so I saw the title and was immediately intigued about what this book might be about. "Fools Crow" a phrase which means nothing and everything at the same time. Without knowing it's meaning it screams Native Amercan ( well it does to me ). The crow is big in the Earth peoples of the world and to me as well. He's the watcher. He shows up everytime you think you're all alone and then he squawks to let you know that some one is watching.

The story was so full of pain. It gives the description of the biological warfare of the time, which was spreading smallpox, which accomplished the white settlers plans without wasting bullets. You also heard the adapting philosophies of the Indians, how what was happenning fit in with their belief system, which was not Chritianity, with it's fatalistic belief in Armegeddon and sufferring bringing salvation. But they knew that the success of the white man meant the annihilation of their people.

It was an incredible book. Read it if you're a history buff and you want to know what was really happening during that era.
