Neck Pain Syndrome

1st PBGV in my family developed neck pain syndrome at 12 weeks after her 2nd vaccination for DHP. She lived with recurring symptoms until the age of 3 1/2 which is when she passed. Breeder had never had a history of NPS.
Received an unsolicited email from the breeder of the paternal grandfather, a very well known and widely bred show dog. Breeder of grandfather defended in the email that the french lines behind him threw NPS but that info was not made available to her initially. She claimed that by the time she had this info available to her this dog had been bred many times. As a pet person new to the breed I naively thought it would have ended there. However this dog continued to be shown and used as a stud dog. Being empathetic to other pet owners whose peebs suffered with newly diagnosed NPS I corresponded with them and discovered that this dog was either the sire or grandsire of the affected peebs. I have a strong medical background and understanding of genetics and realize that it takes 2. Pedigrees need to be studied very carefully in hopes of producing sound and healthy puppies. But if you have a known "carrier" even if there is not a genetic marker. it is time to re-evaluate a breeding program, particularly if you are a breeder on health and genetics committee as the breeder of this dog was.
