What the hell does Ted have to do with this?

Peter, I don't give a rat's ass what Ted Kennedy thinks, and neither does anybody else who matters in this race. He's from Massachusetts; this race is about Virginia and Virginians. The DNC and DSCC will back whoever Virginians choose, just like they ALWAYS DO. James Webb has NO extreme-right wing baggage. Tell me if I'm wrong. Webb didn't like the Vietnam memorial simply mourning those dead, he also wanted to celebrate the survivors and veterans. Why would the Jewish community have anything against Webb? He's never said anything against them. He says he's a Democrat, and I trust him, becuase he's always been a man of his word.

That do it for ya, Peter?

Jim Webb

What does Ted Kennedy have to say about a Jim Webb candidacy for the US Senate from Virginia as a Democrat?
What does the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee have to say about it?
What does the Democratic National Committee have to say about it?
Jim Webb has a grat deal of extremist, right-wing Republican baggage.
Webb initially opposed the Vietnam Veteran Memorial on the Mall as a "wailing wall."
What does the Jewish community say about Jim Webb as a candiate for the US Senate, especially as a Democrat?
How do we know Web won't switch parties if elected to the senate as a Democrat. Webb and his family and ancestors have a long history of Kentucky hill country Republicans?

Who should the Dems Nominate for US Senate?

I hear Brian Moran may be interested. James Webb would be an excellent choice. Creigh Deeds is an interesting idea. Leslie Byrne is a non-starter. I'm lukewarm to Harris Miller.

Draft Creigh Deeds!!!! US Senate

Creigh Deeds for US Senate!!!
Contact him to convince him to run. His email is at his website:
http://sov.state.va.us/SenatorDB.nsf/0/e51dc0c59c09cfcc85256b37004e2c7b? OpenDocument

Deeds is known and has already earned the vote of 50% of the state despite having almost no money to promote his most recent race. He is a great progressive candidate and not vulnerable to the typical attacks of Republicans.
Harris is unknown and a weak candidate by my standards. He is a northern Virginia Democrat without the grassroots base of Creigh Deeds.

WEBB

I wish that Webb would run because the best way to beat a republican is to run one against him and get all the Democrats together to support the one Republican against the other then the Republican loses but a Republican wins but the REpubublican that wins calls himself a Democrat and it's all cool

We are active Democrats, are we not?

Bill: I met with Mr. Miller stricly OFF THE RECORD, at his request, not mine (I had wanted to meet ON THE RECORD, but he declined). Having said all that, I would of course give Mr. Miller a fair shake if he agreed to an interview with me. I would also support him (and opposed Allen, obviously) if he turned out to be the Democratic nominee for Senate in Virginia this year.

"I HAVE met Harris Miller and have spoken with him extensively. The bottom line is that I don't agree with him on a number of important issues (none of which he's discussed publicly...wonder why not?), and also I don't believe he has a "snowball's chance" of defeating George Allen."

Lowell,

So does this mean that you may not support Mr. Miller (at all) if Mr. Webb decides not to run? In other words, will you not bother to fight because you believe Mr. Miller's effort may be a lost cause?

Now that Mr. Miller has announced that he will be a candidate, are you willing and open to meeting him? In other words, if you did speak extensively with Mr. Miller, did you blog the conversation(s), and if so, where can we read them? If this was a private conversation(s), then are you open to hearing what Mr. Miller has to say as a candidate, in the public arena, and then blog so that we may hear your opinions? After all, Mr. Webb has not announced his intentions, and from what little I have read, there seems to be no recent public comment from Mr. Webb?

I understand and admire your enthusiasm for Mr. Webb, although it seems premature to cast Mr. Miller aside when he is currently the only Virginian Democrat who chose to enter this very difficult race.

As far as James Webb is concerned, I've met him and am EXTREMELY impressed - with his intellect, with his belief in fairness for everyone, and with his willingness to talk straight, even when it's not totally "pc," unlike many politicians. Also, I am convinced that Webb can defeat Allen in the "four Virginias." This is going to be FUN. Run Webb Run!!! :)

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your comments supporting Harris Miller. If he is the democratic candidate against Allen .... he'll get my vote because ... well I can't stand the George factor. Allen & Kilgore & Bush .... they clearly are candidates you can vote against... they are all cut from the same vapid cloth.

I however am looking to someone I can easily vote for.

I'm hopeful Mr. James Webb will run and I think he will. If you look into his background via the very informative book "A Nightingale's Song" there's plenty of material highlighting a life's work and disposition. By reading his works via the jameswebb.com site ... or even amazon.com book reviews .... one get's a very good sense of the man. You might not like every thing you read .... he is combative (abrasive?) -Born Fighting!!! However he is methodical and contemplative in his actions... chooses his words and battles carefully ...... Compared to most career politicians on the national playing field Webb is MOST IMPRESSIVE. Blunt honesty is a virtue in these days of Spin Doctoring Panda bear politics.... Don't you think??

Make no mistake. This senate race in Virginia is a National Race... by virtue of the tense times & poisonous political atmosphere...proxemity to Wash, D.C. James Webb is already a National Figure. He would be the finest Senator Virginia could send to Washington, D.C. It would make a lot of people nervous on both sides of the aisle ... because.. well... he just might say what needs to be said... Senator Bob Kerry said it best .... "a unique and powerful voice which could change the course of the nation's future" .... (words to that effect).

Independents and moderates (Dem / GOP) usually vote for the candidate they perceive as the best leader .... and Mr. Webb has that story. To win in Virginia one needs to carry those voters.

But you're right Bill .... will James Webb run??? I think he will.

James Webb for Senate .... when INTEGRITY matters!!

Lowell,

It is noteworthy that Mr. Miller declared first and it is noteworthy that Mr. Webb has not declared, and probably will not.

I strongly believe that there is a big difference between candidates that decide to jump in and run because they are willing to run a very difficult campaign in order to represent this state, and "potential" candidates who continue to wait and see what the prevailing winds may be (in order to determine if there really is a chance of winning). Courage v. linger.

I've met Mr. Webb -- Twice. Both times were in the early nineties. I doubt he has changed that much. I mean Mr. Webb no disrespect, but he can be a little abrasive at times, particularly under the spotlight. Sometimes abrasive is good, but never in a campaign. If Mr. Webb ran and won the primary, I would vote for him in the general election. That said, I'll do everything I can to help Mr. Miller during the primary.

Regarding Mr. Miller -- please go meet him yourself. He will be in Williamsburg on Saturday (see his website for time and location). Make your own decision. I spoke with Mr. Miller, and he answered my questions. I liked what I heard, and I am a democrat--I am going to support him. I won't detail what we talked about because you should decide for yourself directly from Mr. Miller and let him know that you plan to blog. I think you will find him very receptive and genuine.

Finally, please do not run into the same trap that got the Iowa caucus in trouble in 2004. They chose Kerry because they thought he would be a more "unbeatable" candidate against President Bush. When considering Mr. Webb and Mr. Miller, decide for yourself who is the best candidate that cares the most about Virginia and who will serve a full six years with consistency.

Hope you are doing well. Please give my best to KB.

Bill, are you arguing

that because Harris Miller declared first, he should be the Democratic nominee? How about Miller's positions on the issues, have you discussed those with him? How about his chances of defeating George Allen, have you thought about whether Webb or Miller would be stronger? Just curious...

Harris Miller

I was glad to see that Harris Miller announced that he will run for US Senate. I sent a fax letter to his campaign office this past Monday evening to wish him well and thank him for the courage to run.

Harris Miller called me on Tuesday evening to thank me for the letter, and we spoke briefly about his motivation and determination to represent the Democratic Party in this race.

Harris Miller wants to represent Virginia, and he is determined to run a strong campaign. I was impressed with him, and I mailed a contribution to his campaign on Wednesday.

I have not heard one peep out of James Webb, and timing is everything. As a former Navy Corpsman and then a commissioned officer, I admire and honor Mr. Webb's Marine Corps and civil service. But Mr. Webb’s military service and a great website does not necessarily make him a better candidate for Senate in Virginia—especially when he remains silent.

Given that Mr. Webb remains mute on any decision for 2006, and given Mr. Miller just stuck his neck out this past Monday--my vote and my efforts will be for Harris Miller.

Check out Harris Miller's Bio. at www.miller2006.org, and sign up to offer your support!

James Webb for Senate

In response to RG's spasm over the definition of being a Democrat .... Is John Murtha a Democrat or a Republican with a D after his name?? How about Bob Kerry??? Ever heard of a Conservative Democrat??

Or do you just have a problem with the concept of Independence and Integrity?? Both of which are embodied in the life and career of the honorable James Webb. Key word there Honorable!!!

Does being Anti- Bill Clinton mean one can not be a Democrat?? Because surely James Webb was one of Bull**** Bill's biggest critics ... for the same reason he's one of Dubbya's biggest critics. He happens to abhorr elitist who dodged the war (the Vietnam war) and yet have no qualms about sending the rank and file (you know the common man - would be democrats) into harm's way. Mr. Webb should he decide to run would in fact have an enormously positive effect on the (state & national) Democratic Party simply because he's a man a High Ideals and Principal, unlike the majority of the Careerist politicians on the current Political Scene. The Democrats are missing the boat on being the REFORM PARTY because they have no able Captains .... at present. Perhaps that will change should Mr. Webb decide to enter the Political arena.

JAMES WEBB for Senate ...... when INTEGRITY MATTERS!!

Other (Definitely!)

Is this the best Virginia can do, choosing between a Republican who signs "D" after his name, or an IT type who's an easy target for the GOP slime machine>

Good grief! Are there no real Democrats left in Virginia that so many of you people would complacently accept a choice between these two? Way-to-the-right as this state is, it almost seems there are more gays out of the closet here than there are real progressives ready to stand up and call themselves Democrats!

It really, really looks like our family will end up sending our campaign contributions out of state to aid in the campaigns of real Democrats elsewhere, 'cause it doesn't look like we'll have one from Virginia to vote for in the 2006 Senate race.

Pretty Websites Do Not a Candidate Make

James Webb may have a flashy website, but the man is clearly a Republican. Democrats should get serious about supporting the one candidate who has decided to put himself forward in an effort to unseat George Allen. Harris Miller is running, wants to win, and needs our support. Let's stop having wet dreams about Reagan's Secretary of the Navy and give a serious candidate the attention he deserves.
