James Webb

I agree James Webb is a very attractive and very electable candidate to run against Allen. In addition to being a bona fide war hero, he was a Secretary of the Navy under Reagan (albeit a controversial one) who resigned over the administration's backing off of its commitment to build a 600 ship Navy. He since switched parties. So, he's a progressive former Reagan acolyte with impeccable pro-military credentials who can write and speak. A real trifecta.

Webb will not be manipulated by any political machine, and will say and do exactly what he thinks is right. He doesn't need this, but we need him, unless we want to concede Allen is unbeatable.

Warner and Byrne

Mark Warner and Leslie Byrne are not running for Senate this year, so there's not sense spending time thinking about the possibilities. At this point, it's either Harris Miller or James Webb...nobody else's name has even been mentioned, as far as I know.

Need to pick some one with name recognition

I really think if we want to beat the good old boy network we need someone with name recognition. I would go with Warner and if not him I would go with Byrne.

Webb For Senate

Before people offer their opinions, they should visit James Webb's site. Dig a little below the surface. The guy is thoroughly disenchanted with the Republicans. There is a WS Journal article the election up there from Oct. '04. The Journal ed page put the headline spin on that article, but if you read it carefully there is a rather different conclusion to draw from it.

This guy criticized the invasion of Iraq months before it started. He saw what Bush and the Neo-Cons were up to post-9/11 pretty early. If he had been in the Senate he absolutely would have voted against invading Iraq.

He is the only candidate capable of beating George Allen. I will do anything to help Jim Webb.

senate race

It should be Mark Warner. He is probably the only one who can win, and if he could be Senator he would have a better chance of his pipe dream of the Presidency. Warner is letting down Virginia and the Party by not running, not just in Virginia but the whole country.

I was visiting friends in PA yesterday and they have a great shot at unseating ultra-right Allen twin, Rick Santorem. But they are worried that if we don't run someone against Allen then all those Repub resources will freely flow to PA and make their race all the more difficult.

Given that Warner seems unconvincable in this, I would go for Leslie Bryne. The fact is that she did do amazingly well in the Lt Gov race, and probably would have won if the Coordinated Campaign had had more faith and given her more visibility. I know a lot of people don't like Leslie, but she articulates a clear vision and a program that I believe in. And anyway, if we can't win against Allen we at least need to give him a good run for his money.

WEBB IS THE ONE!

The idea here is to WIN! If you want to win against the good ole boy, aw shucks, parrot for the "Bush-Cheney-Rove Hate Machine", Allen, the clear choice is Jim Webb.

Importantly, Webb has the courage to speak plainly and to stick to one's core beliefs, even when they are not popular or "politically correct."

No more Kerry's-Mr. Kerry greatly disappointed by not responding to the "swift boating" (unfortunately, now a part of the American lexicon) of him. Jim Webb is a "man who went." (Silver Star Medal, two Bronze Star Medals, and two Purple Hearts). This stands in marked contrast to Allen. So when Allen plays "tough guy", we counter with a tougher-smarter-more accomplished former Republican who turned on the "Bush-Rove Hate Machine." I remember in 1994, Webb stepped up and delivered an impassioned denunciation of the cynical attacks by Oliver North in his campaign against Chuck Robb, the seat that Allen later won. Perhaps, there is some sweet irony in the fact that I write today to encourage Webb to run for that very same seat next year.

Our nation cries out for men of courage and conviction to lead us from the darkness that is the Bush-Cheney era. I strongly encourage all to encourage Jim Webb to step forward and take on one of the Bush-Cheney gang's consistent parrots, George Allen. Virginia and our great nation deserves better than the craven rants of a failed governor who ascended to the Senate with the vigorous assistance of Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and their ilk.

Go to his website and explore, I believe you will conclude he has the right stuff to WIN and that is what it's all about. Just let them try and "swift boat" Webb, he might just challange them to come outside!

Insanity

Leslie Byrne is not a "proven" vote getter. The fact that she did as well as she did is because one knew who was running for lieutenant governor, not because she was a good candidate. Democrats win in this state when they run on being centrists that approach governing in a passionate, yet nonpartisan manner. Does anyone but me remember Henry Howell???

Plus, she's a terrible fundraiser. I mean terrible.

I wrote in Russ Potts for LG, and I'm proud of it. I'll write him in again if she runs for Senate. She will not receive my vote, ever.

Best Picks for '06

My first pick has always been Don Beyer. However, given that he has already removed himself from a possible candidacy I believe that Leslie Bryne should enter the race. She's passionate and will offer voters a reasonable alternative. In addition, she's a proven vote-getter. Had she had better TV ads she probably would have defeated Bolling.

Democratic candidate against Allen

About three months ago, Don Beyer told me that John Grisham (the lawyer/author who formerly served in the Miss. leg.) might run. I do not know if he is currently interested. He would make a stronger candidate than Webb or Miller in my view. He has a lot of money from his books and movie rights, is a good speaker, and has great name recognition.

Add in the other poll results

The first poll was FUBAR...the site kept going down every 5 minutes. Results when I switched to this poll were 16 for Webb, 2 for Miller, and 3 for "other."
