Christian Bale by a small margin

Man this was tough.

It was a close race between Christian Bale, Russell Crowe, Johnny Depp, Viggo Mortenson, Matt Damon, and Mark Ruffallo.

In the end I went with Christian Bale. Even though he is never in my personal ballot yet for any of the years, I do feel he has done an excellent job with Batman Begins and American Psycho. In the case of American Psycho I found the role and movie quite silly to actually love, but Bale made it work.

Viggo already has 3 LOTR movies, A History of VIolence, and that stupid Bullock film (I dont remember when that movie was released I think it was 2000). for the LOTR films alone should deserve all the merit but then LOTR was an ensemble piece. Plus that Bullock film ... yuck.

Johnny Depp is always great but I just didnt go gaga over his Wiliwonka and Michael Jackson, i mean JM Barrie, performance. Heck the latter scared me.

I also like Mark Ruffalo always feels honest in his roles, but I have yet to see him in a lead role where I can truly judge him (except that 13 going on 30 thing which I really dont like).

Matt Damon, I like a lot. He can be this generation's action star if he wants too. Plus I liked him in Syriana, Oceans Eleven, and that cameo in Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back. But, aside from Bourne, nothing to make me say "I like this because of Matt".

Russell Crowe comes very close as well(my 2nd choice actually). I liked him in all his roles except Cinderella Man and Proof. But he's way too ruggeded, I prefer elegance(Bale).

Jake

my vote goes to Jake :)Gerald, it's because of his amazing performance in Brokeback mountain. (and DD) "The most acclaimed movie of the year". It won TONS of awards all over the world. 3 academy awards, a few baftas, the venice film festival, etc. All radios, magazines, newspapers, the news, etc give it 2 thumbs up. People were talking about it.. and everything. the hype was there.

Two people gave Outstanding perfomances. Jake & Heath are so natural in what they do. And the advertisement that says something like "This film is capturing America's hearts" is definitely true. It's touching people all over the world. It's revolutionizing hollywood. It's pretty much the first movie of its kind (same-sex related) that has REALLY effected people. just like the ads says, it's "the" best love film of the year. Just incase you didn't know.

And by effecting i mean not only in emotional ways but in SO MANY other ways. theres a small list of what fans are doing. Here i'll name a few

*** people are writing tons of letters to Ang Lee, heath, jake, anne, michille, the cast, etc thanking them
*** people are writing letters to the Riverton office (the mail office in the movie) to see what kind of responses they get and to surprise them
*** amazingly, people are actually taking Trips to the actual filming locations! yes! there's guides on the internet with specific pinpoints and directions so you know where to find them! and being in the same spots of Ennis/Jack.. meanings a whole whole lot. I myself plan on taking a trip whenever I find that certain someone in my life.
*** and shockingly, a petition is going around asking for one of vermont's (the state) mountains's to be called Brokeback Mountain.. this isn't to replace the movie and it's not where they filmed it, but its a Tribute. Plus many of vermont's mountains aren't named so whoever thought of this is amazing.

etc. There does that give you a good reason why Jake is leading? (heath too) :) i can give you things that fans are doing because of this movie? or links to the petition or the brokeback film spots, etc? if you guys want.. anybody interested?

Heath Baby!

In all the films I've seen, only twice have I been unable to see the actor behind the role as I watched. The first was Liam Neeson in Schindler's List and the second was Heath Ledger's incredible performance as Ennis del Mar in Brokeback Mountain. Fom his "clenched fist" speech to the range of emotion displayed in his eyes and his face, he perfectly captured the very essence of Ennis. Based entirely on that, my vote goes to Heath.

Gerard Butler

OK, where is Gerard Butler on this list? Since he wasn't on here, I voted for my second favorite actor, Ed Harris.

Best Actors

I saw a special screening of the Director's Cut of Donnie Darko last night at the Los Angeles Film Festival--yes, it was there. One of the Artist-in -Residence had it added because it was one of his reasons for being a filmmaker. After watching it again, it reaffirmed my vote for Jake-he was damn good and the movie rested on his shoulders and already withstands the test of time. Yes, its a cult hit as is BBM (in a sense), but isnt that the stuff Hollywood legend is really built on?? When I think of those films, October Sky, The Good Girl, M

Ralph!

Please, everyone, Brokeback Mountain is not the *only* film to have arrived in multiplexes in the last five years! I know it's great, but whoa - tone down the love.

My vote goes to Ralph Fiennes.

your top ten (so far)

obviously this could still change but it looks like you're saying

1 & 2. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
3. CLIVE OWEN

the race for 4th place very tight between
CHRISTIAN BALE, GAEL GARCIA BERNAL, JOHNNY DEPP, JUDE LAW

and for the last three spots in the top ten half of these men look to make it:
MCKELLEN, CROWE, PENN, FIENNES, MCGREGOR, and LEUNG

if you don't like the way the numbers are going, rally the cavalry.

The voting so far

I just love how - at the time of writing - Brad Pitt and Colin Farrell both have ZIP, but Jim Broadbent has 2 votes.

Amused me is all. My faith in humanity is restored (with due respect to Brad and Colin).

Sir Ian!

Honestly, considering who's got the most impressive acting chops, it wasn't a very difficult choice. Ian McKellan, no contest.

The Living Receiver

How many actors could have done 'Donnie Darko' at 21 and 'Brokeback Mountain' at 24?

Jake 'Holden Worther' Gyllenhaal all the way.

BERNAL all the way

I have to say that Gael gave it all this decade and the academy just ignores him.

It was close for me I have 5 in my mind:
Ledger, gyllenhaal, Ledger, McGregor and Bernal

but i went for bernal

Law!

I don't know why but I'm shocked by the fact that Gyllenhaal is leading. Yes, I thought he was terrific in Brokeback, and very good in Donnie Darko, but otherwise I dunno.

My vote went to Law -- scene stealing work in AI and Road to Perdition and superb central/supporting work in Cold Mountain and I Heart Huckabees.

Actor of the Decade

Ed Harris gets my vote.

Gyllenhaal gives two great performances in Donnie Darko and Brokeback Mountain and all of a sudden he's treated by his fans like Marlon Brando re-incarnated. Give me a break.

Personally, I find him a very hard actor to get excited about, despite his obvious talent. I blame Bubble Boy.
