Annabel Lee

I wonder if anybody ever steps back from this poem and just asks himself how E. A. Poe did this. This is the greatest poem in American literature. It's even better than the Raven and that's damn damn good. I remember reading Verlaine in college who was obviously influenced by the same guy Poe was influenced by namely Baudelaire and I still thought how did Poe write this. There is gloom and melancholy in Verlaine eg such as the tombs of the Naiads which is very primordial and pagan but nothing touches Poe. After four years I'm back here to say this again I still believe you cannot separate this poem from the American Civil War and to be truly experienced one should use an opiate derivative and sleep in the gutters of Baltimore. This man was a genius.

Cf., Aura Lee with Annabel Lee

Aura Lee, Aura Lee, Maid of Golden Hair!
Sunlight came along with thee,
And flowers in the air.

It's impossible to think about the deep melancholy and gloom in poems such as these, so popular during the Confederacy, e.g., "Just Before the Battle Mother," and not mourn the loss of literacy in our culture, as well as all things felicious, cultivated and worthy. Would that a Poe or a Clemens be alive today to critique this sad farce of a Nation.

Belle of the South

Less than twenty years after he penned it, it could verily stand for something completely different altogether, albeit quite figuratively. And now any gentle person living under this flag of tyranny, waits by the sepulcher of the English language (long-since murdered by urban Negroes) and our conquered banner, in eternal melancholy.

30 years or more ago i saw a movie in class in highschool which was my first exposure to Annabel Lee. the movie was in black and white and i dont remember who read it on the film but it was very haunting. it was a love that never died. i never forgot it.

A few students enjoyed reviewing this poem because of the romanticism and sweetness of his love to his wife. The majority of the students were concerned about his obsession, the depression behind the poem and could not get past the issue of the age difference between Virginia and Edgar.

words of the poem

Henry Lee -- you must have missed the link on the left hand column that shows the original manuscript of the poem in Poe's handwriting. You can also google 'tomb by side of sea tomb by sounding sea'

But, thanks for your comment. It led to adding the revised version as well and replacing one of the 'terrible' readings with another that no doubt isn't close to James Mason's or any other professional thespian. Hopefully, not having an astounding and professional voice won't stop poetry lovers everywhere from reciting poetry out loud.

Note: The same poll will appear on both versions.

The poem is beautiful. The two readings given here are terrible.

The actor James Mason made a fine recording of this poem in the 1950s with a beautiful musical background. It was issued on a 12" LP along with his recordings of Poe's 'The Tell-tale Heart', 'Silence'.

I have a number of copies of this poem in different collections of poetry, but I have never seen this poem with the wording like this copy.

Every copy I have seen says, "I was a child and she was a child..." instead of "She was a child and I was a child...". Also, in the last line the most common wording is "...in her tomb by the sounding sea."

Wow, it is a very beautiful poem of true love indeed. It is full of burning passion and devotion of undying love, written about the beloved Virginia whom I mostly envy for having experienced such a strong love.

I've enjoyed this poem. I think that Allan Poe in this poem shows his capacity of transmit his feelings. It's very romantic and at the same time very sad.

In my opinion this poem is a prove that the real love exists. If a man could do something as beautiful as this poem, I was mistaken when I thought that this kind of love was only in fairy tales.

I must recognise that I envy Virginia because she received the best love poem.

It's a good poem, i really feel what the author wants to show. He really loved that woman and that is a beautiful feeling.
