RE: Favorite album?

As much as I love Greg Brown (and I do, from Motorcade of Generosity and Fashion Nugget alone his style possibly tops my list of favorite players) you've got to think about how much of everything John McCrea writes. Xan is a great musician, too, though I generally prefer Greg's tone, yet if you've ever listened to Deathray you might be surprised at how un-Greg Brown it sounds.

RE: Favorite album?

I know exactly what you mean: I feel like Greg Brown has a certain style on fashion nugget and motorcade, yet he sounds completely different in deathray. I miss him in cake, but comfort eagle is as good as any album they've made in my opinion.

RE: Favorite album?

I'm not comparing Greg and John.. I'm saying that together they made an unbelievable team. John may come up with a melody on rhythm guitar.. but it's a world of difference to then have someone like Greg lay down mind blowing, intensely groovy lead track over top of it. It becomes something completely different (to me anyway.. possibly because I'm a musical myself).

Here is my opinion.. since Greg left I have liked CAKE less and less. Their latest album, Pressure chief, I bought and listened to about twice. It's a tremendous and disappointing departure from what CAKE once was. The keyboard has now taken a prominent role where once there was magical guitar.. and just to seal the deal.. there's even a sickeningly cheesy synthetic drum track clicking away on every tune. I mean come on... what happened to CAKE? Cakes new album does not even come near my radar of what I think good music is. There, I said it.

RE: Favorite album?

Yeah, as a guitarist I cite Greg Brown as probably my number one influence. His use of pentatonic shapes - well I'm probably not the best person to talk to for musical terminology. I generally play by ear and tab. But I've got to express my love of Pressure Chief here. I know what you mean about it being keyboarded up and I appreciate it. However, I've always seen the keyboard as taking the spotlight from the trumpet rather than the guitar, which I thought worked well for the album. I'm sure I read way too much into things but it seems to me the programmed drums reflect the fakeness of the politicians shaking hands on the cover. And if you're not interested in that metaphor, I love the album for what it is, anyway. It could have had a pig on the cover and...oh. Love that album, too.

Tattoo vote. Which would be cooler: Fashion Nugget crown or Comfort Eagle couple? I've thought about this long and hard and I'm very tempted to get the man and woman seriously. Sure, I'll have to have it removed on the way to pick up my dozens of pills in the distant future, but come on.

My vote would be go to the CAKE store and buy some shirts to express your devotion.

Yeah, ok, sure. "Dan." As in "Definitely Not In The Band Dan"?

RE: Favorite album?

yes, it has also taken the spotlight from the trumpet. I'm sure one could think of many excuses as to why there are fake drums on all the songs.. but it's likely due to CAKE just wanting to move their sound in that direction simply because they like the sound, rather than them wanting to make a statement.

RE: Favorite album?

hey MG, i think the crown, but that IS more 'tattooish', of course. i'm sure there aren't a lot of tattoos like the cover of comfort eagle around... why don't you get the pig? that's my vote... even though it wasn't a nominee, heh. also, i'm biased -- i like pigs. why do you have to get it removed later? you don't get pills now?

"Aging black leather and hospital bills, tattoo removal and dozens of pills."

Though I'm sure verbatim quoting gets old for writers. Whatever.

oh, ha ha... btw, do you think quoting a writer ever gets old to them? i guess, probably, with certain things.
