Might of not been a hotel like the Stardust or Circus Circus (which both sandwiched the "Ho" in between,) but it was simple. Also, you got to see, if you were lucky, a sexy frontage to the Riv, the Hilton in the distance, the beginings of the Wynn Resort, a swanky Stardust (in which you felt that you wished you were there than here at the "Ho") and a tent at Circus Circus (although some folks, even today, thought the joint was/is bad....)while at the same time you think: "This is good as it gets!" It was also seen in such movies such as Rain Man and Vegas Vacation. The Westward Ho was my first stay in LV and I was bummed when they closed it in November of 2005. I think its owners were willing sell the property in a high-priced market and a feared competiton of a new Wynn LV opeining up in the neighborhood; they struck the iron while it was hot. Today, the old plot of the casino, deli, check-in and showroom is the new home of Viva McDonald's. Not bad for a replacement of the old MCD's next door, but it being around the stalled Echelon project doesn't make things any better. 2.The Stardust. That place, which had been owned by Boyd since the Mid 1980's, had been spruced up through the years, and had one of the most beautiful displays of neon on the Strip, both on the sign and on its tallest tower. When the Wynn opened up in April of 2005, the Boyd's, who worked with Wynn in A.C. years earlier, got worried, and kinda reactionary. It was the highest moneymaking joint in the Boyd chain of hotel/casinos, yet still, they got anxious. Why? Though I never stayed at the Stardust, I had the chance to be around the property months before it closed. They (Boyd) treated the property with utmost resepect and class up to its closure and implosion, yet tearing it down for a high-end property, especially when the market and the economy took a nosedive, was a huge mistake. Other than recent graffiti found at the base of the signs, overall I didn't find anything wrong with it....except it was almost empty compared to a year earlier, which was abuzz with energy. I felt the property was all dressed up and had nowhere to go; They put money into it for over 20 years and they went and knocked it down. It should have NEVER been torn down. The Boyd's, in my opinion, had too much good faith in the market and the its fellow investors (Morgan's;)they had no real financing of the project in the first place. Dumb move. |

The property produced $100M in EBITDA (rough estimate for profit) before they tore it down. It was an icon on the strip, and what MANY people outside of Vegas thought of when they thought of old Vegas. Dealers were nice as hell, and it was cheap. First place I stayed in Vegas 20+ years ago, way back in the back which was basically a motel - they even had coin-op washing machines back then and a RV park in the back. Truly sad - instead, Boyd tore it down and ****ed away $500 million on a half-completed construction site. |

Free stays on your birthday, good blackjack rules, decent coffee shop and cheap gourmet room. Unbelievably cheap rates for very low play. Since their demise, I've visited many hotels, but none will ever have the charm of the LL. RB from IL |
