To Freedom" or "Robbin' The Hood" or the pathetic, left-over scraps that have comprised the predictable soulless race for compilmations since Bradley's death ("Sublime's Greatest Hits....ha ha yeah right" and "Second Hand Smoke Gets Recycled" are the two most irritating examples). Bradley's guitar playing is much more fused with authentic reggae rhythms and nihilistic "**** this, let's smoke this blunt" philoso-punk than the annoying Ska tracks of "40 Oz. To Freedom" such as "Date Rape" and the juvenile harmonies of "Waiting For My Ruca." Brad, Eric, and Bud don't sound so much like excited reggae-infatuated pot-head dub-novices on the album "Sublime," they sound more like the excellent musical chemists that they were. The lyrics are much more interesting and the clutch of classics of this album are a snap-shot of a generation; ranks with Nirvana's "Nevermind" and Guns N' Roses "Appetite For Destruction" as an album that defines an epoch of musical awareness in the last 20 years. The music is so fresh that no elitist snob critic can really paste the word "derivative" on this album in a disparaging way; classic! |
