The Movie "Saving Private Ryan"

The movie "Saving Private Ryan" was originally written by me, Velvet Elaine Santiago. It is about my grandfather Ralph Santiago, who saved Private Ryan and the father of Anne Frank during World War II. I wrote the movie when I was nineteen. They do not even mention me anymore, it is like I don't exist.I read a photocopy of the diary of Anne Frank, when I was a child it was sent to my grandfather from Anne's father. I met Anne's father when I was a child, he said I looked just like Anne.I am upset that I cannot even purchase a copy of the movie that I wrote, it has been replaced by a new movie that just recently came out, which stars "Tom Hanks". It seems to be that they have just replaced my grandfather with Tom Hanks to make the movie look more American, when America is made up of many types of Americans about seventysix kinds of Americans live in the U.S. today. Why would they think that they had to make the movie more American and act as if I never wrote it,is it because I am a women. I'm not asking for anything. I just want to see my name in print. I think it is stealing when someone make a movie you wrote and puts someone elses name on it. We should embrace diversity today and not replace it. We should accept that America is made up of many differenct types of people who do not all look the same, and women should recieve recognition for their work. I would just like to see my name in print. It should say somewhere written by Velvet Elaine Santiago.

men and women

By the way, women should better at Literature, and even Logics and Math as they mostly have the left dominant brain hemisphere, which is responsible for linguistics. It's a pity that it was determined by society that women were to play the piano and bring up children...

Women writers

I am currently taking a course called Writing by women. We have been examining female writers that wrote before the nineteenth century. Many of these women are extremly talented, but have not been included in the canon. Have University course like this are just another to broaden the scope of the canon.

To Kill a Mockingbird

I am doing some research on this topic, and have found that one book in particular enjoys much commercial success and is frequently taught in high schools, but is not included very often on the lists of "Great Books" - lists which overwhelmingly feature male writers. Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, in 1988, was being taught in 74 percent of American High Schools. It still sells a million copies a year, even after 43 years in publication. It addresses important American issues. Why is it not included in the lists?
My theory is because it was written by a woman.

Women Writers

It is changing little by little. Women writers are making their way into literature classes. However, we still have classes that our especially focused on women writers. We have this because women writers from all ethnic and ecomonic backgrounds are still not represented equally. Until the majority of literature classes give equal attention to male writers and female writers, we will have this divide. This also goes for writers of color. One of the most amazing writers, regardless of race and gender, is Zora Neale Hurston. Thank you, Alice Walker, for starting the Hurston revival. She is amazing and beautiful writer who represented her heritage, loved who she was, and wrote poetically and with a lovely heart.

The canon

At secondary school we looked mainly at the works of male authors. However at university (Exeter) we are investigating issues of the canon and canon formation, ideology and power as well as looking at feminist, Marxist and post-colonial approaches to literature. Therefore I think that the question of the canon being mainly composed of the literary creations of white, western, Christian males is being addressed in some circles. However since this discussion has been going on since the 60's there is a lot more work to be done before we see the effect reaching the schools and general public.

The Slow Revision of the High School Literary Cano

Before I became a high school English teacher, when I was an undergrad, Is pent two years researching the inclusion of American female authors in the high school curriculum and state-adopted textbooks. Much to my dismay, as I revisit this topic in graduate school, I realize little has changed. Where are all the women writers? Does anyone have any current information about how often women writers are being included in high school English classes?

I find it disturbing that so many graduate classes in English focus solely on male authors. Also, a past professor and graduate director where I'm at told me that "women need to find the tiny little places [in academe] where they fit in." PRD

Take a look at J.D. McClatchey's anthology of World poets, and compare that to the anthology Women Poets from Antiquity to Now.

Last night, I took my daughter to the book store for her summer reading. The list had 23 male authors and 1 female - Jane Austen. That is why I visited your site today - to get her another list! Jo_ann_w@hotmail.com
