RE: RE: DS Blows

I can't say that it "blows," since I did have a good time whipping through the single player and testing out the multiplayer, but I agree that the story is thin. There is no NPC interaction once a character is in your group, no chance to roleplay. Perhaps that is why the game got such good reviews from the shooter freeks and not as good from the RPG crowd. As a RPer, I'm ready for NWN. I will be interested to see the player made mods and seiglets for DS though. Perhaps those will be better. I bought it hoping it would hold me over until NWN releases and I have to say, that at this point, that is all it will do...if that.

RE: DS Blows

Its fun with comparison, but this one lack a really vital ingredient.

Where are the particle effects? Well there are some, but not as much as there should be.

Trailing fireballs, iceshards etc in DS. I like them a lot, and without them graphics dont do DS justice.

Though from what I seen in the NWN screens, they are better composed. DS effects becomes dull after a while, but nevertheless very good.

Better shots please.

RE: DS Blows

the single player story in DS does suck, but i think as the siege editor is about to be released, with people who might actually be into roleplaying, dungeon siege will be a little more fun to play (especially if people played in character on multi-player). the survey was about graphics and i think that, comparing NwN to DS as far as graphics goes, DS wins because of the seamless world and the extra greenery and ambient life in the game that makes you think you're walking through a forest or desert or through a dark cavern. NwN definitely has better looking spell effects and some nicer particle effects (like the fire on the demon's wings) as well as the reflection from metal armor that is absent in DS. Though apparently DS will allow MOD-makers to edit and create their own particle effects.

RE: DS Blows

Dungeon Seige is about the most infantile game I've ever played. You basically point your characters where you want them to go and let them fight by themselves. Then you pick up the loot, rinse, wash, repeat. Most boring game I've played since Diablo 2.

RE: RE: DS Blows

If you think DS is better than NWN, you wouldn't know a good RPG if it bit you in the ass.

DS will be no comparison to NWN, NWN will beat all the other RPGs out there hands down.

RE: DS Blows

_Fubar_ is absolutly right. NwN rules.

DS has a thin story and only thing you can do is send your party to fight, watch them fighting and win, pick up the loot and continue to follow the plot. Graphics are great, but even D2 had been more fun. No leveluping, no party roleplaying, ... DS is definitly not better than NwN.

RE: DS Blows

Well, in comparison to graphics, imho they are equal, alltough DS indead has some smoother PC/NPC, but again NwN has again beter FX

But gameplay wise, DS is nothing more as a polished Diablo2. Nothing wrong with that, and fun to play in anticipation of NwN, but i bet as soon NwN is released, i forget about the exsistance of DS :D

Yes NWN will be good. Just worried some people might expect to much of it and rate it badly

RE: DS Blows

my review

anyway here's my review of DS the game.

First thing i noticed when i fired up the game was the character customization. you can only change your sex, your appearance and your clothes. that's ALL in the charater generation. Feeling vaguely disappointed already, i carried on to play. the world map loaded in an impressive short time, which was good. the graphics immediately blew me away. it took only a few seconds to get the hang of moving the camera around my character, so i was all-set to get into the game. i fought a few krugs, and was impressed by the staff-swinging combat animation that my character made. then i found my first spell. which showed me how lamed-brained the spell system was. you get to cast 2 spells, and the only variation in those spells was 1.) more damage, 2.)different creature summons 3.)different protection spells. that totally sucked.

after a few minutes i got sick of the combat. click enemy, yawnn..... click again....yawn....press H for potion...pick up loot. repeat the process. that's all there is to the combat. no excitement, no kick, no panic, no battle lust. just boring clicks. everytime i see a new monster, or a new "boss", there'll be a "wow" factor for 2 seconds as i revel in the beautifully render monster, then it's back to boring click click click.....

and the weapons they have in the game. my god they were stupid. the ONLY thing that affects what weapon i want to use is Damage. that's it. this weapon does more damage, i'll use it. one of the most fun factors of finding a magical weapon in BG2 or D2 is that you can specialize in a weapon, and you HAVE to find that specific weapon to fit into your specialization. another thing is that when sometimes you find a very powerful club, and a lousy katana. you'll do a ton of damage if you use the club, but you don't wanna use it 'cos you hate clubs and you dig katanas. so you throw the club away and pick up the lousy katana only because you liked it. In DS there is nothing stopping me from using the most damaging weapon. All there is too the weapons is, this does more damage than that. so i'll use that. it's bloody brainless.

camera view? this one got me pretty worried as NWN might fall into the same trap. There WILL be some instances in the game when you cannot see your characters, for example when they are under an arch or in a narrow corridor. this irritates the hell out of me.

another thing is DS's villages. like in D2, villages are only there for you to sell and buy items. that's all. there's no one you an interact with there. much unlike BG2, where towns and villages play a big role in the game.

roleplaying factor? Zero. 0. Negative. the first hour into the game and i get to talk to one guy ONLY. the terrain is shaped into a "corridor" so there's only one path to take, and i'm constantly reminded that there is ONLY ONE path that's set down for me, and that's the path i must go. No choices, no freedom. no being who i want to be. my companions are just brainless snobs i control around. i dunno who they are, i don't know what's their story, or why they join me. there's no interaction between me and my party.

after 30 mins i find myself finding excuses to why i'm still playing it. the real reason is that i don't wanna waste the money i spent on it.

oh yeah. a few hours into the game and i still don't know what the hell a krug is, what the hell i'm doing, where the hell i am, and why the hell am i the only poor farmer that can save the world.

the score?

the only good thing i can say about the game is graphics. even so, i think that NWN's graphics are better.

DS: 3/10
don't buy it unless you have the brains of a dead squid and enjoy games with zero excitment, zero fun.

RE: DS Blows

remember the hype for DS? now compare it to the hype of NWN...Everyone thought DS was going to own, but it didnt (still a great game).I just hope we dont have too high expectations for it as we did for DS.

RE: RE: DS Blows

You know, I think that the 'game' called Dungeon Siege is actually just an excuse to showcase the graphics engine that runs it. My guess is that they are hoping to cash in on other developers who will want to use the engine to make completely different (if not better) games with it.

I have played the DS demo and found the graphics to be very good. But the shining star of the game is it's seamless, load screen absent world. It's great to just walk into a dungeon without having to 'wait'.

In conclusion, DS has great graphics and little to no story. NWN has great graphics and will probably kick butt in the story department.

thanks for reading.

blahblahblah

DS graphics are quite decent as well as sound fx
sure it's linear and typical diablo hack-n-slash, but nobody has played NWN yet so it's premature to compare
and DS is entertaining when i don't want to be married to my pyooter (BG2 anyone?)
just stfu, drink/smoke something and enjoy the game -or don't
