Is anything real, infinite

Space is infinite.

RE: Is anything real, infinite

You may think so.
Space, however, is expanding. It cannot be both infinite AND expanding.
It must therefore be either static and infinite or expanding and finite.
The maths, and observations, say it can't be static and is expanding, therefore it can't be infinite.
How do you argue against that?

RE: Is anything real, infinite

Then why don't I just run through the wall of space. It is finite after all. And when I run through the wall of space will I exist anymore?

RE: Is anything real, infinite

Space is infinite - the universe (a sphere of loosely bound material is expanding within that space.

Space cannot be bounded.

Megabrain does NOT have an accomplice.

RE: Is anything real, infinite

Okay.
You have now changed your first statement where you said that space is infinite.
What you are now saying is that the Universe is finite and is expanding into something that is infinite. We can't call what it is expanding into 'space', because we use that term to refer to the universe.
And, no, you will not be able to reach and 'end' of the expanding universe as I explain on my main page.

RE: Is anything real, infinite

The 'universe' and 'space' are not the same thing. The universe is all matter all energy, all 'fields'. Space is the absence of these, the interstellar 'space' is not strictly 'space ' because it is awash with photons. I think you might just like to update your definition's to today's general thinking.

Ever heard of Friedmann's models?.

RE: Is anything real, infinite

You are a little confused.
It seems to me from what you are trying to say you are mixing up the terms 'vacuum' and 'space'. Space is the general term given to the area that starts at around 60 miles above the surface of the Earth. There are different definitions as to how far away it starts.
No, I certainly do not need to update my definitions, they are completely correct.
Yes of course I know about the Friedmann Model, anyone who has the slightest interest in cosmology knows about it. Why do you ask?

RE: Is anything real, infinite

It's down to definitions.
the universe [to me] is all that physical matter and energy which exists.

It is [commonly]believed to be expanding.

it is expanding (and therefore consuming) a greater 'void' this 'void' is absent of any part of the universe. I believe however that this void is subject to time and is three dimensional.

RE: RE: Is anything real, infinite

You say...."it is expanding (and therefore consuming) a greater 'void' this 'void' is absent of any part of the universe. I believe however that this void is subject to time and is three dimensional."

If the void is absent of any part of the universe then how can it have dimensions and time which are properties of the Universe?

Seems like a contradiction to me.

RE: Is anything real, infinite

OK keith, if the universe is expanding what is it replacing?

If you say 'nothing' or it is just creating itself, then your answer will be as convincing as those who propose the existence of a deity.

RE: Is anything real, infinite

We will never know what the universe is expanding into as we will never be able to leave the universe to find out, we can only speculate.
It is my guess that the universe is expanding into a void, an infinite nothingness. If it contained properties it could not be infinite and in turn would be required to be in something else that is outside of it, and so on ad infinitum.
I take it you are happy now with the terms 'space' and 'vacuum'?
Why did you mention the Freidmann model? I ask you again what about it?

RE: Is anything real, infinite

Great, Wonderful,
I say the universe is replacing a void - you say NO - then you say the universe is expanding into a void. If that is the sum of your ability to argue then a discussion on the three friedmann models would be way over your head.

RE: Is anything real, infinite

No need to be sarcastic. I am well versed with the Friedmann model of the universe but from your argument can see you know very little about cosmology.
So feel free to discuss it.
I have not once said the universe is not expanding into a void, just the opposite. If you wish to argue that then simply show me where I said it and I will admit to being wrong. Failing that you can admit to being wrong.
You are just getting confused again, as you did with vacuum and space.
Try and be a little more careful in your arguments.

No answer Megabrain?
Seems like you must have been wrong then.

I think Megamug has run away to read his new book 'Space for kidies, a beginners guide to the heavens'.
