E-mail I found posted on a website. ---Will we still be the Country of choice and still be America if we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries that came to live in America because it is the Country of Choice???????? Think about it........ ---All I have to say is, when will they do something about MY RIGHTS? I celebrate Christmas, but because it isn't celebrated by everyone, we can no longer say Merry Christmas. Now it has to be Season's Greetings. It's not Christmas vacation, it's Winter Break. Isn't it amazing how this winter break ALWAYS occurs over the Christmas holiday?? We've gone so far the other way, bent over backwards to not offend anyone, that I am now being offended. But it seems that no one has a problem with that. ---This says it all! ---IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. --I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America. ---Our population is almost entirely made up of descendants of immigrants. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of America being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. ---We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language! ---"In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture. ----If Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives every! citizen the right to express his opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so. So wait...if people come expecting a country of choice...and then choose...its no longer a country of choice because they didn't choose what was the only option...which would of made it not a country of choice to begin with...gyah...confusing. What they are saying I think is that either this country had no choice to begin with, or it lost its choice...but I guess thats always the case since people only want 2 choices and can't come to an agreement. ---All I have to say is, when will they do something about MY RIGHTS? But it seems that no one has a problem with that. I don't think the problem is in the rights or lack of them, its in the person's opinion that they lost their rights. This is the first time I've heard anyone complain about this. There is no holiday Nazi that will shoot you if you say Merry Christmas. Where the hell is this going on? I hear people say Merry Christmas all the time. The only place I saw Season's Greetings is on buisness cards. And since when did anyone care about a generic card printed to thousands of employees unless it had a christmas bonus (which last I checked is still called a christmas bonus...not a seasons bonus) And even if it was changed because of the religious advocates, is it really an issue worth this much hassle over? And its called winter break because most breaks go into January. Last I checked January second wasn't part of Christmas. Yeah. Its also amazing how Summer break always occurs around July 4th but we arent' calling it Patriots Vacation. And really lots of people still call it Christmas Vacation. This is just whining. Really. If someone can't find anything to do than complain about how letters are being used to talk about a season thats suppose to bring out the good in people, then they really are worse than anyone who they are whining about. Oooh...nice starting title. Gives a nice barrier of "Them" and "Us" because we aren't all people...we are just groups of large faceless embodiments. It's a nice tactic, since it makes you feel like the other side isn't you. They arent people, they are raging short-haired bulky lesbians wearing army boots! You know...I have NEVER heard anyone complain about how the patriotism was offending others...well..save for the Muslims who experience a serious increase in abuse and vandilism and harrassment. But lets face it, people have complained on both sides before Sept 11th, very very quietly during, and then are going to complain again for a while. And this paragraph really only hints at how these arguments really only impact the country very rarely. America IS a multicultural country! The USA is freaking HUGE! full of 50 states (including an island and a hunk far away from the US called Alaska!) Its full of small groups and large groups of varying ethnicity. The West Coast is nothing like the East Coast. We are anything BUT a single entity. (BTW, the US consumes 25% of the worlds resources though the population is less than 5% A homeless man at a soup kitchen is living a better life than 30% of the world) Let's think for a second. What IS this national idendity and lifestyle? Anyone? Don't go scarcastic or into cliches. ...anything? Exactly. The national identity is a nice term that has no real power behind it. Like "Traditional American Values" What are these traditonal american values? Everyone knows the term...but what exactly are the values? Seriously! I sit and think but I can't recall any particular identity. Unless you count middle-class white male with wife and 2 kids in the suburbs. But how realistic an identity is that when you are a hispanic woman? I don't know what this person's problem is. Many of the non-english speaking groups live in small clustered communities in certain areas and don't bother hardly anyone. You don't go to a nudist colony and start telling people to wear clothes, so why should you go into China-town and expect everyone to speak english. And I'm fully aware that yes, there are cases where the two sides conflict, but 90% of the time, both sides are rather mutual. And frig! I can't even think of any non-english groups around where I'm living. Other countries bend over backwards teaching their kids english as their second language and the majority of American's dont even flinch. The amount of American tourists who go to places like Paris and Africa and Japan and then get upset that people don't bend for them is probably just as high. A lot of people do learn the language, or try their best. It's only a small majority of those who don't. Once again this person acts like everyone who comes to the country is just as thick-headed as they are. Can't anyone ever try to work out a compromise. You shouldn't have to abandon your beleifs and culture. It's why many of these people live in small communities of their own....usually in places a person who is writing this email would never go anyways. ---"In God We Trust" is our national motto. It's also clearly documented that Thomas Jefferson was an atheist and that many presidents and founding fathers in letters they wrote to eachother had some pretty fun things to say about Christianity...but I won't hold it against people. Humanity has a long running tradition of finding what they want to hear to support their side and discarding anything against it. If anyone remembers basic American history, a lot of people left England long ago because their beleifs were being persecuted by the king and they wanted to live their culture in peace. So why is it that now that their religion is the top of the litter, that suddenly THEY are the ones persecuting? This person makes Christians look bad. I guess the view always changes when suddenly you are on top of the pile looking down instead of being looked down upon. I mean "wah". What is the friggen hang up on "In God we Trust" in schools? Maybe we should start sending our kids to school out of the womb since apparently we rely on the school to teach our children everything. We already teach them to drive, how to act in public, sex, and everything else. The school's have a hard enough time trying to keep things ubiased, so why add religion into the throw. If you really have to have it, send your kid to a private school. And furthermore, what is so hot about the founding days? the times were JUST as sucky back then. Back when it was legal and even good to beat your wife and kids to near death. People seem to look at the next generation like they are going down the tube, and look back on the "old days" like people walked on pearls and smelled like roses. The time was just as crummy and full of problems as now. America has ALWAYS had an argument with immigrants. The indians sure weren't happy when the settlers killed off their entire way of life and "intigrated" them into American society through sheer force. People were mad when the Ireland potato famine forced half of the country to immigrate otherwise they would DIE to the point many people on the east coast wouldn't even serve an Irish man because he was considered sub-human. Oh wow! Such insight! What a way to say something, then say the COMPLETE OPPOSITE in the same sentance! "Why yes! You can have an opinion...unless its not ours...if not...LEAVE" despite the United States was suppose to be all about how if you have a problem with the system, YOU CAN FIX IT AND NOT HAVE TO LEAVE. And I can't beleive they are using the First Admendment. Thomas Jefferson is probably spinning in his grave like a jet turbine. This was an admendment designed so that you could disagree with the government and things and not have to lose your job, your freedom, your life for it. And this person is showing the complete opposite...AND DOING THE EXACT THING THEY ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT. They are complaining about whining, then whining themselves. They are making me whine! And I have YET to hear ONE SINGLE person complain about the flag. There are no rallies to remove the flag from school! There are no anti-flag groups I can think of. And Uncle Sam is a war-symbol. I have seen no one really carying about him or even knowing who he is. Why is it the only side that is whining is the one side that is accusing the others of whining? And I'm just a bit irked that they have the gall to tell people how to live their lives. Then again I forget that this person doesn't see the other side as individuals with needs and feelings and as people, they are just a force they never saw but hear about and have made a boogy-man to blame and yell at. ---If you agree -- pass this along; if you don't agree -- delete it! Now thats just stupid. If all the people who disagree delete it, then only one side will get this hate-filled propoganda. I'm amazed they didn't tack on little flag GIF animations. But then again this is probably the tactic. It's not going to change anything. (Mmm..does this make me a complainer? :p) The most they can do is respond to the person who sent it and then it dies here. It doesn't solve the problem, heck, it doesnt even help it at all. it probably wasn't a problem until the person read this email, thought "that sounds right" and passed it on, then two hours later forgot all about it. The sad thing is, this email has some good points. People should if they move the United States, try to put an effort into intigrating. But they shouldn't have to abandon their culture. And the way this email is written, its either All or Nothing. Why can't people who learn english live in a spanish-speaking community and continue using spanish? Why can't Native Americans have the right not to have to give up their beleifs out of fear of being beat up in schools? Christianity is a big and sometimes nice religion, but it isn't the only one, and America is suppose to represent equality and showing favour of one religion over the other, DESPITE the past, is going against that. I guess it really boils down to what a person really thinks America is. This whole issue of immigrants isn't anything new, and really isn't as serious as it sounds from this person. Unless you live 2 blocks away from a spanish or german community or work in a job that focuses around minority groups, you likely don't even have this issue at all. The End Where do you stand?
